Program Overview

Black Hawk College offers an Associate in Arts degree. Students who intend to transfer to a four-year college or university will meet with an academic advisor and select courses appropriate for their major at a specific four-year college or university. Students who are undecided about their major will choose a variety of courses to fulfill their interests.

The first two years of a baccalaureate degree at a four-year college or university are devoted primarily to general education courses. A small number of introductory courses for a specific major are typically taken during the first two years. Academic advisors work closely with students and the four-year colleges and universities to assure that suitable courses are scheduled.

Students will take courses in English, Communications, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, Fine Arts, Humanities, Life Science, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Non-Western Studies. Students are also required to complete a minimum of 64 credits.

    School Overview

Black Hawk College was founded in 1946 as Moline Community College, where classes were first held in the local high school for the benefit of World War II veterans. Today, Black Hawk College is a two-year, public community college within the Illinois Community College District that serves nine counties in northwestern Illinois at five locations. In addition to the college’s distance education programs, Black Hawk College offers over 140 programs of study, which include career, certificate, and transfer options. Black Hawk also supports community outreach programs. The school’s mission states: “Black Hawk College enriches the community by providing the environment and educational resources for individuals to become lifelong learners.”

Distance learning options include: online and hybrid courses, in addition to telecourse delivery, and Interactive Television. Almost all coursework for the associate’s degrees can be completed online. The eLearning environment at Black Hawk typically mirrors that of traditional on-campus counterparts, with structured content, assignments and deadlines, and communications with faculty and peers. Classes are asynchronous, but are not usually self-paced. While most work is completed online, students may need to take proctored exams. Hybrid class environments at Black Hawk operate much like that of online coursework, with the exception that students must also attend face-to-face sessions.
