Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Petroleum Production Technology
Bismarck State College offers an Associate in Petroleum Production Technology (PROD) online. Gas production volumes and reserve estimates have increased, creating high demand in this work force. This program is designed to provide students with a broad background to operate and maintain the equipment used in the oil extraction and services industry in a safe and responsible manner.
The program will cover the nature of gas and oil, where it is found, leasing land and contracts, the mechanics and techniques of drilling, testing and completing of a well, artificial lift, surface equipment, separation, storage, measurement, transportation and processing. The petroleum industry, including safety, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control, print reading, troubleshooting and communication and the chemical technology needed for working in various petroleum operations is also covered in courses. Required courses include Introduction to Energy Technology, Safety, Health & Environment, Mechanical Fundamentals, Print Reading, Fundamentals of the Petroleum Industry, Applied Math, Electrical Fundamentals, Instrumentation & Control, Production Equipment, Well Services, Artificial Lift, Operations, Troubleshooting & Communications, Hydrocarbon Chemistry, Production Safety, Health & Environment, Gas Processing, and Practical Applications. Students are required to complete 15 general education credits.
Graduates will be prepared for entry-level employment in exploration, drilling, production, processing, and service sectors. Individuals will understand mineral rights and leasing, know the components of a drilling rig, different production equipment, production processes, various artificial lift methods, well servicing, and petroleum processing. Graduates will also have the basic skills and knowledge of hydrocarbon chemistry, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control, troubleshooting and the importance of safety health and environment.
