Justice Studies - Criminal Justice-Bachelor of Science Degree (B.S.)
Berkeley College offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice for students who are interested in studying the principles and procedures of law enforcement, criminal justice, incarceration, and the legal system. Students will study the theories, laws, policies, and practices associated with criminal and delinquent behavior as well as government response to criminal violations. The program is based on the study of social sciences while still focusing on the application of the law and control of crime. Students will learn about the legal aspects of law enforcement, including the protection of rights of victims and perpetrators, as well as the analytical and statistical approach to monitoring and predicting criminal activity.
The program consists of classroom courses which emphasize real-world education through examination of cases and education which will be applicable on the job. Those classes include introduction to justice studies, communication skills for justice professionals, criminal procedure, criminal law, computer applications in criminal justice, crime and the judiciary, corrections, probation and parole, research methods in criminal justice, police and society, criminology, forensic science, political science, sociology, drugs and drug policy, and gender, race and class.
Through completion of the program, students will have demonstrated the professionalism and skill necessary to earn the degree. The qualifications demonstrate the student has been able to apply the principles they learned in the program into their eventual development as a functional affective professional in their field. These qualifications include but are not limited to: the ability to explain concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and trends in criminal justice, to demonstrate the ability to apply legal and ethical principles to the criminal justice system, to describe the structure, function, and interaction of key institutions in criminal justice, to discuss the patterns, typologies, and root causes of crime, and to apply criminal justice concepts, processes, and practices to social justice and social change.
