Justice Studies - Criminal Justice-Associate in Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.)
Berkeley College offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice for students who are interested in careers in criminology, law enforcement, criminal justice, law, the courts, and the legal system. Students will learn about the processes involved in the investigation, arrest, and legal processes involved in trying suspects, as well as understanding the psychology and sociological factors that induce criminal behavior. Students will learn about statistical monitoring of criminal activity and learn how police forces and other agencies use statistics and other monitoring techniques in order to best manage and control criminal activity. This degree forms the basis for future growth and study in criminal justice by providing the foundation in studies such as communication, statistics, and other basic fields which will be used in advanced study.
The program consists of classroom courses which emphasize real-world education through examination of cases and education which will be applicable on the job. Those classes include introduction to justice studies, communication skills for justice professionals, criminal procedure, criminal law, computer applications in criminal justice, police and society, criminology, forensic science, psychology, sociology, ethics, public speaking, writing through literature, and expository writing.
Through completion of the program, students will have demonstrated the professionalism and skill necessary to earn the degree. The qualifications demonstrate that the student has been able to apply the principles they learned in the program into their eventual development as a functional affective professional. These qualifications include but are not limited to: the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the causes of crime, criminal law, the role of police, and forensic science, to demonstrate understanding of specialized areas of criminal justice, such as terrorism, cybercrime, global security, and intelligence, to demonstrate understanding of emerging issues and of a focus in a specific area, such as policing or security, and to prepare with a general education curriculum for future studies in undergraduate or graduate education.
