Bergen Community College offers an Associate of Science degree in Education for students who are interested in beginning the educational path towards becoming a teacher. Most teaching positions require at least an undergraduate degree and some require a graduate degree, and as a result, specialized options are available to study the science of education. This program will provide students the fundamental skills in education and a general course curriculum in order to help them become better teachers and learn a wider variety of topics in order to become more accustomed to the material they will be teaching.
The program consists of classroom courses which emphasize real-world education through examination of cases and education which will be applicable on the job. Those classes include introduction to education, college algebra, trigonometry, statistics, English composition, the humanities, oral communications, educational co-op, sociology, introduction to philosophy, general psychology, child psychology, sociology of the family, principles and practices in education, introduction to special education, natural science, and foundations of multicultural education.
Through completion of the program, students will have demonstrated the professionalism and skill necessary to earn the degree. The qualifications demonstrate the student has been able to apply the principles they learned in the program into their eventual development as a functional affective professional in their field. These qualifications include but are not limited to: the ability to treat students equitably, to create multiple paths to the subjects they teach, through their knowledge of how the subject is created, organized, linked to other disciplines, and applied to real-world settings, and to draw on knowledge of human development, subject matter and instruction, and understanding of students to make principled judgments about sound practice.
