Bay State College offers an Online Criminal Justice Degree for students interested in a career involving being a part of public service organizations relating to criminal justice, law enforcement, or the legal system. Leaders in this field have the unique and demanding responsibilities of dealing with criminal behavior, including managing criminal populations or criminal activity, and preserving the peace, while maintaining a respect for individual rights and freedoms. Students will learn about community and diversity while developing their understanding of criminological theory, policy, and research methodology, among other topics.
The program consists of classroom courses which emphasize real-world education through examination of cases and education which will be applicable on the job. Those classes include college algebra, public speaking, English, psychology, function of police in modern society, computer and information literacy, criminal justice research methodology, sociology, introduction to criminal justice, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, and the sociology of deviance.
Through completion of the program, students will have demonstrated the professionalism and skill necessary to earn the degree. The qualifications demonstrate that the student has been able to apply the principles they have learned in the program into their eventual development as a functional affective professional in their field. These qualifications include but are not limited to the ability to explain concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and trends in criminal justice, to demonstrate the ability to apply legal and ethical principles to the criminal justice system, to describe the structure, function, and interaction of key institutions in criminal justice, to discuss the patterns, typologies, and root causes of crime, and to apply criminal justice concepts, processes, and practices to social justice and social change.

In 1946, Bay State College limited instruction to enhancing skill sets for students entering the airline industry. Then in 1961, Bay State relocated to its current campus in Back Bay, Boston. By 1975, the college expanded programs to offer Associate’s degrees, and gained accreditation in 1989. Bay State introduced Bachelor’s degree programs in 2004. Currently, the private, not-for-profit Bay State College houses the main downtown Boston campus, along with a satellite campus in Middleborough, Massachusetts, and a third online division.
Students can complete online degrees through the distance learning campus at Bay State College. Online courses feature asynchronous instructor-guided sessions, complete with assignments and class activities. In addition, classes operate on the same schedule as on-campus counterparts, with eight-week long classes conducted in six terms per academic year. Students participating in on-campus day or evening programs may also enroll in online classes to accommodate busy lifestyles. Online students also have access to resources, including the Bay State College Library and its extensive online database.
