Program Overview

Barclay College offers a Bachelor of Science in Psychology for students who want to learn the psychological theory and the principles of cognition and behavior necessary to act as a counselor, clinical psychologist, or any other field where the processes of the brain and behavior are analyzed. Students will learn how to integrate faith with a practical understanding of the field of psychology and will be challenged to apply psychological principles to practical situations and relate the findings of psychology to biblical Christianity.

The program consists of classroom courses, which emphasize real-world education through examination of cases and other real-world examples in education that will be applicable on the job. Those classes include life assessment and self-management, Bible study methods, techniques of counseling, family systems, introduction to the Bible, developmental psychology, theories of personality, Christian church history and ministry, social psychology, models of research design, human sexuality, abnormal psychology, psychology of religion, cognition, and tests and measurements.

Through completion of the program, students will have demonstrated the professionalism and skill necessary to have earned their degree. The qualifications demonstrate that the student has been able to apply the principles they learned in the program into their development as a functional and affective professional. These qualifications include but are not limited to the ability to understand and apply basic research methods in psychology, including research design and data analysis and interpretation, to respect and use critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and, when possible, a scientific approach to solve problems related to behavior and mental processes, to understand and apply psychological principles to personal, social, and organizational issues, to tolerate ambiguity, act ethically, and reflect other values that are the underpinnings of psychology as a science serving a global society, and to apply cultural competencies to effective and sensitive interactions with people from Christian backgrounds.

    School Overview

Quaker settlers established the Kansas Central Bible Training School in Haviland, Kansas in 1917, and for most of the twentieth century, the school operated as Friends Bible College. Then in 1990, recognizing the achievements of the first Quaker theologian, Robert Barclay, the college was renamed Barclay College. Though transitions and name changes have occurred, Barclay College remains true to its Christian-based heritage and resides on about seventeen acres in the small town of Haviland, Kansas. Barclay College also maintains an online campus for distance learners.

With a focus on Christianity, Barclay College strongly encourages all students to devote a portion of their academic career to service. Service is measured in units, and Barclay expects students to earn at least one unit of service per semester. To facilitate a service connection, Barclay College’s website links students to Christian service opportunities extending from the Haviland community to distant locations as far away as China and Brazil.

Barclay College acknowledges the needs of learners by sponsoring diverse learning programs. Undergraduate students at Barclay can choose from bachelor’s and ssociate’s degrees, along with a host of minor options and two certificate programs. Furthermore, students can complete personal enrichment courses or opt to enroll in an adult degree completion program.
