Program Overview

The Bachelor in Healthcare Management Degree from Avila University is designed to prepare students for pursuing leadership roles in the world of healthcare and its related fields. The healthcare industry is constantly changing as new research and technologies emerge, creating a need for professionals trained in the most contemporary aspects. The BHM Degree is intended for those with a background or interest in either healthcare or management.

This program provides flexibility for working professionals, allowing courses to be taken at distance, on-campus, or in some combination of the two. Graduates in this program will be able to pursue employment in allied health, public and private care offices, and hospital and clinical administrations, among other areas.

While in this program, students may develop a community and national perspective of how the administrative aspects of a healthcare system operate. They will study key laws and gain the skills necessary to assess and solve problems using statistical data and industry research. Finally, students will use everything gained throughout the program in order to create solutions to problems that incorporate current research and capitalize on market trends.

In order to complete this program, students must earn a total of 128 credits from a few distinct areas. This includes a three-part liberal arts-based core, major-specific requirements, professional studies classes, and healthcare management coursework. Healthcare management classes include Healthcare for the Elderly, Strategic Management of Healthcare Managers, and Current Issues in Healthcare. Certain courses are only available during either the fall or spring semesters, so students are encouraged to meet with an advisor to create an appropriate plan of study.

    Applicants to the Advantage program at Avila must be at least 23 years of age or have a minimum of three years of work experience.

    Transfer students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA on all transfer coursework.

    Applicants must also submit official transcripts of all previous college coursework and/or high school.

    School Overview

    Avila University is a four-year, private Catholic university directly affiliated with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, and located in Kansas City, Missouri. The school’s roots date back to 1836, when the first sisters of Saint Joseph arrived in the United States from Lyons to open a school for the deaf. By 1866, Saint Joseph’s Academy opened, and it would later become Avila University. To date, the college offers more than 60 undergraduate majors and concentrations as well as six graduate programs. Avila University’s mission states that the school “is a values-based community of learning providing liberal arts, professional, undergraduate and graduate education to prepare students for responsible lifelong contributions to the global community.”

    The Avila Advantage program offers accelerated online bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and graduate certificates that provides flexibility for working professionals. Distance learning courses are formatted in self-paced, eight-week sessions that begin monthly. While some programs may require on-campus, intensive weekend components, others are delivered completely online.
