Prospective students are able to pursue either the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts with an Information Specialist concentration at Austin Peay State University. This program is offered at the Department of Communication at APSU and is designed for students that wish to pursue information management careers in both the public and private sector. Graduates should also be prepared to take continuing education at the graduate level in a field in or unrelated to communications.
This program may be completed entirely online, which is intended to aid working students with complicated schedules. Students are able to enroll in either a full-time or part-time basis, depending on availability and ability. Possible career opportunities include positions in tourism and economic development, chambers of commerce, nonprofit agencies, and military-based public affairs departments.
To complete this program, students must earn a total of 120 hours of credit, including 41 hours from a general education core. This core includes classes from a range of disciplines that include communications, the humanities, and social and natural sciences. The main difference between Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science candidates is that BA students must develop proficiency in one foreign language, which is demonstrated by earning six credits in the subject.
The major and concentration requirements for this program include a set of three core classes that result in nine credits and a number of courses needed to properly instruct in the Information Specialist concentration. Those enrolled take courses in relevant subjects such as integrated corporate communication, media law, public relations campaigns, and news reporting.
