Program Overview

Individuals looking for a broad based knowledge and education in religion may want to consider Athens State University’s Bachelor's of Arts in Religion program. This degree is made up of four major areas of study: 1. World religions, including an encompassing history of religion, 2. Moral values and theology, 3. Biblical Studies and 4. The Sociology of Religion. The program will address these four points in both ancient and modern religions. Using sacred texts and religious traditions, students will examine the relationship between religion and culture. Sociological research will be made available so that students will be able to learn how religion has evolved throughout history. This program is ideal for individuals who wish to pursue an academic career in theology through advanced or graduate study. Individuals looking to enter careers in ministry or teaching may also benefit from the classes offered by Athens.

The total credit hours needed for completion of the Religion Major is 125. These credit hours will be divided between general education courses such as history, social sciences and mathematics; and advanced theology and religious courses. Examples of courses that potential students can look forward to: Survey of the Old Testament, Comparative Religion, Survey of Church History, Moral Values in Today’s Society, Interpreting the Text, and Sociology of Religion. It is recommended that religion students planning to attend graduate school or seminary complete at least 6 semester hours of foreign languages. Students will also have the option of choosing a minor if they wish. Athens offers Church Finance and Religious Education as minors available through their online program.

Students who have completed previous education requirements at an accredited university or school can transfer up to 60 hours of credits into this program.
