Master of Science Materials Science and Engineering

Program Details

Arizona State University Online offers a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering for students and professionals in engineering who are interested in how materials are developed in order to suit specific tasks in technology and design. Students will learn about the materials science and engineering through research and advanced course work where they will learn about the factors that contribute to development of new materials. In addition to new materials, students will learn about production science and technology in order to design systems which can improve material quality and cost efficiency.

The program consists of classroom courses that emphasize real-world education through examination of cases and education that will be applicable on the job. Classes include: mathematical and computer models in materials, physical metallurgy, physical metallurgy laboratory, mechanical properties of solids, analysis of material failures, fatigue, fracture, and creep of materials, introduction to materials characterization, introduction to electronic, magnetic, and optical properties, nanomaterials in energy production and story, polymers and composites, introduction to ceramics, fundamentals of microelectronics packaging, materials engineering design, and linear algebra in engineering.

Through completion of the program, students will have demonstrated the professionalism and skill necessary to earn the degree. The qualifications demonstrate the student has been able to apply the principles learned in the program into their eventual development as a functional affective professional in their field. These qualifications include the ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the structural, chemical, optical, and magnetic properties of materials, to understand the differences between materials and their uses, to understand the production of materials and chemicals used in production, and to demonstrate an understanding of the uses of materials and properties of construction.
