Arizona State University Online offers a Master of Advanced Study degree in American Media and Popular Culture for students and professionals in marketing, media, advertising, journalism, and other fields which are related to media and contemporary popular culture who want to study advanced topics in film, television, video games, the internet, music, and screen writing. Students will study analytical, creative, and communicative skills needed to interpret and create relatable media. Students will be prepared to teach, act as critics, executives, producers, and writers in entertainment.
The program consists of classroom courses that emphasize real-world education through examination of cases and education that will be applicable on the job. Those classes include marketing, innovation and technology, applications in media, television and film studies, print and online news, business strategy for competitive media, the history of American television and film, and developments in online media.
Through completion of the program, students will have demonstrated the professionalism and skill necessary to earn the degree. The qualifications demonstrate that the student has been able to apply the principles they have learned in the program into their eventual development as functional affective professional in their field.
These qualifications include the ability to develop entertaining and relatable writing and media programming for multiple media sources, to understand the internet and how internet media sources are affecting advertising and marketing, to understand how the internet has affected traditional media sources, such as television, film, newspapers, magazines, and other non-online sources of news and entertainment, and to work as writers, producers, and other agents inside the mass-media industry.
