Program Overview

Angelo State University offers a Master of Education degree in Guidance and Counseling for students and professionals in education interested in aiding the development of children and adolescence through educational and life guidance. Students will learn about the role of guidance counselors in promoting development in others by helping the student discover interests, understand their strengths and overcome their difficulties in education.

Students will learn about advanced concepts in the application of educational principles in addition to principles of guidance and leadership. Those classes include curriculum development, social and cultural influences, tests and measurements, life span development, applied research, legal and ethical principles, individual counseling skills, group counseling skills, theories of counseling, and career and occupational counseling.

Upon completion of the program, students will have demonstrated necessary educational and professional qualifications for roles within educational organizations as a counselor or leader.  These qualifications include but are not limited to: the ability to treat students equitably, recognizing the individual differences that distinguish one student from another and adjusting their practice based on observation and knowledge of their students’ interests, abilities, skills, knowledge, family circumstances, and peer relationships, to create multiple paths to the subjects they teach, through their knowledge of how the subject is created, organized, linked to other disciplines, and applied to real-world settings, and to manage and monitor student learning to create, enrich, maintain, and alter instructional settings to capture and sustain the interest of their students and to make the most effective use of time.
