Bachelor of Cultural Fluency and Security Studies (B.C.F.S.S.)

Angelo State University offers a Bachelor of Cultural Fluency and Security Studies degree for students interested in developing their understanding of various cultures to the point of fluency and ease of differentiation and integration within those cultures. Students will become familiar with different regions and ethnic groups through their studies and learn about cultural norms, moralities, rules, and taboos in order to understand the methods for working with those groups. In addition, students will work to develop their critical thinking and analytical ability in order to understand strategic cultural issues, foreign policy, and international security studies.
Students will learn about security issues relating to international relations and other issues by developing cultural and social awareness. Those classes include contemporary security issues in world politics, American government politics and national security, the politics and culture of Europe, the politics and culture of Asia, the politics and culture of Latin America, the politics and culture of the middle east, the politics and culture of middle east, comparative security policy and political culture, terrorism and international security, energy and resource security, human rights and international security, and globalization and international security.
Upon completion of the program, students will have demonstrated knowledge and professional expertise in cultural fluency as it relates to security issues between different groups. Those qualifications include the ability to demonstrate an understanding of cultural differences between nations and ethnic groups, to demonstrate an understanding of how differences in culture have resulted in international and ethnic relationships, to critically analyze the security issues as they relate to international relations and foreign policy, to demonstrate competency in assessing international security risks, and to critically evaluate the role and purpose of response agencies in international disputes and border relations.

The degree requirements for the B.C.F.S.S. are the same as the requirements for the B.C.C.S.S. To be admitted into the B.C.F.S.S., students must demonstrate language proficiency in a language other than English by scoring a 2+ on the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) scale on the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) exam or Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT). Students may satisfy language proficiency in other ways as approved by the Department Head.
Students must have completed their Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree from the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) in order to be admitted to the program. For students who do not have their CCAF degree, they will follow the Bachelor of Security Studies (B.S.S.) in Culture and Security Studies Degree Plan.
