Program Overview

Amridge University offers a Master of Divinity in Pastoral Counseling for students who are planning to enter or are continuing careers in ministry and want to develop their knowledge of counseling services. The program focuses on development of theological studies through studies of biblical text, preparation in theology, and study of areas of practical ministry. Students will also learn the basis for psychology through study of theory, scientific research, and clinical practice. The program will develop approaches and clinical techniques as professionals offering therapeutic services to individuals and groups.

The program consists of classroom courses that emphasize real-world education through examination of cases and other real-world examples in education that will be applicable on the job. Those classes include hermeneutics, critical introduction the old testament, critical introduction to the new testament, spiritual leadership, homiletics, synthesis of theological curriculum, assessment of individuals and families, research and evaluation, advanced therapy, marital and pre-marital counseling, marital and family systems, interpersonal and family dynamics, basic counseling techniques in helping relationships, psychology of religion, social and multicultural diversity, marriage and family development, human sexual development, theories of counseling and psychotherapy, introduction to pastoral therapy, and ethics and professional identity.

Through completion of the program, students will have demonstrated the professionalism and skill necessary to have earned their degree. The qualifications demonstrate that the student has been able to apply the principles they learned in the program into their development as a functional and affective professional in their field. These qualifications include the ability to demonstrate higher professional level application of pastoral counseling, to be prepared to work within the Christian community setting as a pastoral counselor, to be prepared for membership within the American association of pastoral counselors, and be prepared for further study and accreditation as a doctor of ministry in family therapy.

    School Overview

    Amridge University is a private, non-profit university that is affiliated with the Churches of Christ. Amridge University was founded in 1967, in Montgomery, AL and was originally known as the Alabama Christian School of Religion. Throughout its history, Amridge University has primarily served as a theological seminary, training ministers in Bible and Christian counseling, but has expanded its educational programs over the years and now offers additional degrees, all of which are taught from a Christian perspective. Amridge’s Turner School of Theology is a central part of the university and offers all levels of degrees in ministry and theology.

    Primarily a distance learning university offering all of its programs online, Amridge University also offers classes at its 9-acre campus, located in Montgomery, Alabama. The Amridge campus consists of a single structure, known as the Morgan W. Brown Building that contains the universities classrooms, library and administrative offices. Satellite campuses exist in Nashville, Tennesee, and Phoenix, Arizona.
