Program Details

The online Doctor of Philosophy in Biblical Studies degree program prepares students for academic teaching, research, and for producing scholarly, creative writing in the fields of Old Testament and New Testament.  The program is specifically designed to prepare students to teach Bible and biblical languages in universities, seminaries, theological schools, and colleges; to teach in related academic fields at the college level; to become a specialist in scholarly biblical teaching; and to produce scholarly writing.  The curriculum provides the aptitude needed to bring critical skills to the biblical text, which includes being able to analyze, interpret, and explain text and to express insights and conclusions in scholarly writing.  Courses cover biblical archeology, the world of the Bible, theology, doctrine, critical interpretation of the Bible, ethics, linguistics, etymology, Biblical authority, exegesis, and the origin and history of the Scriptures while providing essential research tools and methods of critical scholarship. 

There are two concentrations available for students to choose from, with the other one being studied as a minor:

  • Old Testament studies
  • New Testament studies
