One of the most impactful elements of conducting business is marketing. Marketing is the science behind learning, creating, satisfying and evolving new customers, clients, patrons and audiences. Business would not be business if the prime source of revenue disappeared. Marketers devise critical avenues to not only keep the clients already earned, but to constantly evolve to ensure a constant flow of new customers.
Students with a marketing degree will be able to enter into a variety of potential career positions. The positions include the primary concepts of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations. The three concepts comprise a huge portion of revenue, sales and customer acquisition for successful organizations lengthy life among the competitive target market. A target market is the specific audience a marketer is trying to reach. Business’ use a combination of the elements to inform, keep and position a brand as the most desirable. A brief explanation of each element is:
Advertising: Advertising is a form of communication used to encourage, persuade, or manipulate an audience to continue or take some new action. The ads can be viewed through various traditional media; including newspaper, magazines, television commercial, radio advertisement, outdoor advertising or direct mail; or new media such as blogs, websites or text messages.
Example: Budweiser Beer logos on banners and cars, as well as the beer being served at the Daytona 500 Race.
Marketing: As a whole, is the systematic planning, implementation and control of business activities intended to bring together buyers and sellers for the mutually beneficial exchange of products. Marketing is the science of choosing target markets, as well as understanding consumer buying behavior and providing superior customer value. The 7 “P’s” of marketing apply to the results from data and research. They include: Product, Promotion, Price, Place, Process, Positioning and People.
Example: What is the demographic of the Daytona 500? How old is the audience? Where do they shop? Where do they live? Who is the favorite racecar driver? Each answer will give marketers an idea of what products to promote and which celebrities to work with when advertising the race.
Public Relations: Also known as (PR) is the practice of managing the flow of information between an individual or an organization and the public. The use of marketing is not always favorable, and sometimes organizations are not able to control the negative information or outcomes of a specific product being seen by the public. The aim of public relations is to persuade the public, partners, and employees, maintain a certain point of view. Consider PR to be a little bit of damage control in case of clouded judgment or miscalculated result.
Example: The BP oil spill caused an innumerable amount of damage to the Louisiana and Texas beaches. Courts concluded it was BP’s fault for negligence on ocean pipelines, therefore causing an uprising against big oil companies. BP has since paid for all the restoration, clean up and recovery of animals injured.
