Students pursuing a Health and Medicine degree may choose to specialize in the study of Pharmacology to become or to work closely with Pharmacists. The health and medicine degree program at most colleges and universities can be concentrated in the area of Pharmaceutical sciences to expand a student’s understanding of how drugs affect the human body.
The degree concentration delves into the intricate study of the branch of medicine associated with man-made or natural defense the body uses to fight infection, reduce pain and alleviate ailments. Specifically, pharmacology is the study of interactions between an organism (usually humans) and chemicals. Substances that have medicinal properties are considered pharmaceuticals. The field of study will provide students the critical knowledge and understanding of drug composition, synthesis and drug design, molecular and cellular mechanisms, organ/systems mechanisms, cellular communication, interactions, toxicology, chemical biology, therapy and anti-pathogenic capabilities.
Pharmacology is not the same as pharmacy. Students wishing to pursue careers as Pharmacist can use the core curriculum when earning a different type of doctorate degree. Pharmacology is a biomedical science focusing on the research, discovery, and characterization of chemicals which have an indicative effects on an organisms overall function. A Pharmacologist has very minimal, if any patient interaction, and is responsible for the creation of safe and effective drugs.
Pharmacy is more of a health services profession, concerned with the proper execution of learned concepts from pharmacology in a clinical setting. Pharmacists are general practice medical professionals, with the abilities and proper knowledge of compounding and dispensing medications. Pharmacists are experts with drug therapy and use medication to provide patients with positive health benefits.
Graduates of a Health and Medicine degree program can use the core curriculum as the foundation for furthering an education. Students generally go on to pursue Master’s and Doctorate level degree to supplement the basic knowledge with expertise and additional credentials needed in the industry.
