List of Accredited Online Degrees
Students pursuing degrees in Education can specialize in several concentrations within the area of study. The field of Education is constantly in need of well trained and educated individuals to further teach an impressionable younger student body the core fundamentals in academics. Education degrees concentrations can be in elementary, secondary or post-secondary, special needs, technology or counseling and administrative roles.
One such concentration within the education system is the integral role of a school counselor. A school counselor is not only a counselor but also serves as an educator, working primarily in elementary, middle, and high schools. A counselor will provide K-12 students the academic, career, college access, and personal/social competencies needed to become successful functioning adults. The methods of academics and counseling supplement the traditional curriculum of a student pursuing a higher degree in Education. Student teachers/counselors will participate in courses that emphasize child development, creating a school counseling lesson plan and individual counseling for specific groups of students.
The term for the profession, formally referred to as ""guidance counselor"" advocates a child's academic career in addition to personal and social success in elementary, middle, and high school settings. School counselors are held to a standard set by national and local certification and credentialing agencies. The largest accreditation body for Counselor Education/School Counseling programs is the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Students of a school counseling program at any higher learning level will supplement traditional education courses with the additional courses needed for certification requirements. The requirements vary from state to state, and ensure proper understanding of core subjects and concepts in the counseling field.
Graduates of a School Counselor degree program will need to earn at least a Bachelors level of education, meet specific requirements for certification and complete a teaching practicum. The critical role of a well-trained and educated counselor will impact the success of school aged children. The task can be applied to graduates specializing in the field or can be obtained by classroom teachers wishing to enhance teaching activities.
