Information systems commonly abbreviated to IS, is the academic and practical study of the complementary networks of hardware and software used to collect, filter, process, create, and distribute data. The data collected and processed is most likely used for internal improvement, and profit maximization. The formal education bridges the gap between business and computer science, using the foundations of information and computation and strategically applying business models. The industry of information systems also includes Computer Information System (CIS) which studies the computer and algorithmic processes, principles, software and hardware designs, applications, and impact on society while the IS concentration emphasizes functionality over design.
The history of information systems coincides with the circulation of information and ideas, the necessity for data integrity created the need for a system that could be continuously updated to promote modern approaches and improve social effectiveness & efficiency. Information systems are the foundation for information processing within an organization, sharing the benefits of trial and error with modern society.
Information systems relate systematic data with human activity. The evaluated results are an entirely new type of communication, in which the represented data are processed as a form of human decision making and action. An Information System (IS) consists of five basic resources:
- People: who are IT specialists and end-users.
- Hardware: the physical components of an information system, i.e. computer parts and servers.
- Software: consisting of programs and applications.
- Data: the knowledge and databases in the Information System.
- Networks: the communication media and support.
A degree in information system can be applied beyond technology an organizational use. It can also be integrated into the functions associated with the ways organizations interact with technology and the business process. Graduates with an IS degree will gain useful flexibility when entering the competitive job market.
