Career Guide: Online Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Management

If you want to contribute to the medical industry, arguably the most important sector in the country, but you don’t want to work as a nurse, doctor, or caregiver, an online bachelor’s degree in healthcare management may be the perfect choice.

Bachelor’s in Healthcare Management: Program Overview

These are four-year degrees, so unless you have prior education, perhaps an associate’s degree, you can expect four years (eight semesters) of classes. If you take summer or winter-break courses, you may be able to speed your graduation.

While an online bachelor’s degree in healthcare management focuses on the medical industry, they are not medical degrees. They are, essentially, business degrees. They don’t teach you how to diagnose patients, administer care, and monitor medical recovery. Instead, they teach you to manage the complex business and organizations of the healthcare sector.

Because this is a bachelor’s degree, there will be a large amount of general-study courses. This might include, depending on the school and your class selection, literature, history, science, math, government, art, and humanities.

It will also include courses that are specific to healthcare administration. You’ll learn about medical law, organizational management, introduction to business, economics, project management, and healthcare leadership.

These degrees come with a wide range of costs, so you must research the top programs and find the right degree for your needs and budget. While researching these programs, we found that the average cost was somewhere around $56,200, making this one of the more expensive educations. While the highest-cost program was just over $135,000, the lowest was less than $16,000. It’s possible, therefore, to find a program that fits a tight budget, but you need the right resources and information.

Best Careers after a Healthcare Management Degree

Health Services Manager

  • Salary: $101,340
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience: 5 years or more

The healthcare industry is growing. More than ever, people need advanced healthcare for a variety of physical and mental conditions. They need support from highly-trained doctors and nurses who can create better health and happier lives. With more medical professionals, there comes an increased need for managers, organizers, and leaders who understand the medical sector.

Medical and health services managers organize medical services. They plan, direct, and coordinate organizations to ensure medical care is delivered in a timely, efficient manner without sacrificing quality. Managers can be responsible for an entire facility or a smaller department, providing high-level management that might include hiring staff, planning schedules, developing goals, and monitoring budgets.

The pay for this career is excellent, as the top 10% can expect salaries over $205,000. The expected job outlook is also significant, as this career is expected to grow by 32% between 2020 and 2030. In just ten years, the career is expected to add almost 140,000 jobs! With an online bachelor’s degree in healthcare management, you should have little trouble finding a top-notch position.

Human Resources Manager

  • Salary: $126,230
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience: 5 years or more

Whether you decide to stay in the medical industry or not, you could transition your career towards the role of a human resources manager. Every company needs high-quality people in the right positions. To help companies fill this need, human resource managers plan and coordinate hiring efforts.

A human resource manager’s duties can take many different forms. They usually work with a company’s overall management team to identify staffing needs, then create hiring campaigns and oversee the process of onboarding new recruits. They may also mediate disputes, supervise work, oversee benefits, and perform many other staff-related duties.

Additional Requirements for Healthcare Management Careers

To work in healthcare administration and management, you don’t need certification. You will, however, need experience. Most managers, regardless of the sector, need roughly five years of experience before taking on leadership roles. To gain the position of a healthcare manager, you may need to work as an administrative assistant, financial clerk, or health-information technician for at least five years.

There is one area, however, that requires certification. If you take a role as a healthcare manager for a nursing home, certification will be required. This means you’ll have to pass a national licensing exam before you can work in these roles.

While state certification is not required, voluntary certification can be extremely helpful to your career. Certification through the Professional Association of Health Care Office Management, for example, could enhance your career, increase salaries, and open new job opportunities. Certification could also reduce the amount of experience you need before you can be hired in one of these roles.
