Career Guide: BBA in Healthcare Administration & Management Online

Do you want to contribute to healthcare, but don’t think a nursing career is the right choice? Do you want to be part of a life-changing industry, but can’t stomach the idea of giving shots, dealing with wounds, or having extremely personal wellness discussions?

If the healthcare industry seems like your calling, but you’d prefer a more hands-off approach, perhaps a BBA in healthcare administration would be the right choice. With this four-year education, you’ll have a strong understanding of business, management, and leadership, skills that can be focused on the healthcare industry.

What to Expect from a BBA in Healthcare Administration

“BBA” stands for Bachelor’s of Business Administration. These are business degrees, often delivered through a college’s school of business. They are not medical degrees. You’ll learn about accounting, business law, macro- and microeconomics, human resources, and marketing. These courses mold you into a well-rounded business professional, one who is especially skilled at the business and operation of a healthcare facility.

Because these are four-year bachelor’s degrees, you can expect the programs to start with a variety of general-education classes. Depending on the institution and your personal preference, you can take classes that include humanities, art, history, and literature.

Eventually, you will move into business-focused classes, but these degrees are slightly different than a traditional business degree. You’ll learn the basics of business and management, and you’ll be prepared to work in a wide variety of sectors, but you’ll take several courses that are specific to the healthcare industry. Classes will concentrate on healthcare policy, health informatics, the economics of the healthcare industry, and overall management of healthcare teams, which includes elite-level doctors, surgeons, therapists, and practitioners.

These degrees come with a reasonable price tag, especially if you do some additional research and find one of the more affordable programs. When researching these degrees, we found that the average price was $56,400 for these four-year programs. While the most expensive was over $122,000, the lowest-cost option was only $33,360. (Prices are always changing. See the institutions for current tuition costs.) With diligence, you can find a BBA in healthcare administration that fits your budget.

Top Careers after a BBA in Healthcare Administration or Management

Health Services Manager

  • Salary: $101,340
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience: 5 years or more

These are the professionals that make the healthcare industry thrive. Overall, they are responsible for the planning and directing of medical and health services. They might work to improve efficiencies through staffing changes, or develop goals for a facility, department, or team. They supervise staff, set schedules, recruit new talent, manage finances, and perform countless other tasks that allow a medical organization to function. From small clinics to massive hospital networks, these are the professionals that keep it all running.

A health services manager may not have the prestige of a doctor or nurse, but they are some of the top-paid professionals in the industry. With a median salary over $100,000, health services managers are well compensated. Because of the increased need for medical care, this career is expected to grow by 32% between 2020 and 2030, making this one of the best options for business professionals who want strong pay from a stable career.

Compensation & Benefits Manager

  • Salary: $127,530
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience: 5 years or more

Large organizations need experts to plan and coordinate their employee payments and benefits. It falls on compensation and benefits managers to make sure people are paid properly, that wages are competitive while not burdensome, and that proper benefits are being offered. These managers are also responsible for providing access and information on these benefits so that employees can take full advantage of all services.

These professionals are highly paid, earning a median salary over $127,000. However, the growth for this career will only be 4%, well below the expected average of 8%. This lack of growth is expected because organizations may start outsourcing services like payroll processing and insurance claims.

Additional Requirements for Working in Healthcare Administration

To work as a healthcare administrator or manager, you won’t need certification. You will, however, need experience. Managers in healthcare, as well as other industries, usually need at least five years of experience before they are hired to leadership roles.

Most healthcare managers don’t need certification. But there is one exception: nursing homes. Most states require certification for nursing home administrators, but the requirements will vary. Some positions may require registration as an RN or social worker, but you should find plenty of options without official certification or licensing.
