Career Guide: MBA Organizational Leadership Online

Organizational leadership is the practice of leading others, and it can be applied to numerous sectors and industries. From the military to politics to corporations to non-profits to small businesses, virtually every group needs organizational leadership. This discipline includes understanding a group’s core mission and creating a plan to meet that goal. It includes foreseeing possible challenges and creating a plan to deal with those issues.

Organizational leadership can be extremely rewarding, both for career fulfillment, pay, and stability. But to enter this field, you often need the right education, which, for busy professionals, parents, and people who want more convenience, could mean an MBA organizational leadership online degree.

What is an MBA?

An MBA, for “Master’s of Business Administration,” is one of the most popular master’s degrees, perhaps the most popular of all graduate educations. Students love MBAs because if gives them skills and knowledge that can be applied to numerous industries; employers love MBA graduates because they deliver organization and leadership to their groups.

An MBA (regardless of the concentration) gives you a fundamental understanding of marketing, finance, accounting, and other subjects that are important to employers. It’s an intense post-bachelor’s-degree program that builds your understanding of general business practices.

MBAs can be completed in a variety of business-related topics, including finance, accounting, marketing, supply chain management and, of course, organizational leadership.

Most programs take roughly two years to complete, but longer programs are common. These programs, it should be noted, require a busy class schedule, which makes maintaining a job difficult, but certainly not impossible. Because MBAs are so rigorous, many prefer the convenience of online programs for their MBA.

What to Expect from an MBA Organizational Leadership Online

The first step to completing an MBA in organizational leadership is actually being accepted into a program. These are advanced degrees that have high standards for entry; to be completely honest, not all students will be accepted, although different schools have different standard. You’ll need a bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as business, management, or leadership, as well as a strong GPA from your previous studies. (Usually a score around 3.5 is required.)

Assuming you are accepted, you’ll be exposed to many different subjects that make you a more qualified leader.

When you enroll in an MBA in organizational leadership, you’ll be challenged with a wide variety of topics. Classes may include core MBA courses, such as advanced leadership, managerial economics, and statistics. These classes will be more challenging, and look at these topics at a deeper and more detailed level.

Eventually you will take classes that are specific to organizational leadership. Classes will largely focus on leading people, and they may fall under categories such as talent management and organizational strategy. You may take classes that help you understand innovation, and how to encourage innovation among a team of employees. From organizing teams to hiring the best professionals, these high level degrees create better managers and leaders.

Additional Requirements for Organizational Management Careers

Even with an MBA organizational leadership online degree, you will likely need experience before you can work in a leadership role. Most companies require their managers and leaders to have at least five years of experience in the industry. (This experience could come before or after you complete an online MBA.)

Licensing, on the other hand, will not be required for most positions. Certain management roles, such as a construction manager, could require licensing in specific states, but you’ll rarely need a government-mandated license.

Voluntary certification, however, could bolster your career. Building and updating your skills, professional certification can help expand your knowledge and make you an even stronger professional. It’s also possible that certification could lead to higher salaries.
