Founded in 1946, the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the state’s coastal university, is dedicated to the integration of teaching and mentoring with research and service. It began as Wilmington Community College but was authorized to offer bachelor’s degrees in 1963 and master’s degrees in 1977. What was Wilmington College became the Wilmington campus of the University of North Carolina in 1969. Today, UNCW is a nationally recognized large public doctoral university with a private feel.
