Council Reports Rise in MBA Applicants Worldwide |
Applications are pouring in at B-schools around the world according to the 2007
Application Trends Survey undertaken by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC).
According to the GMAC, nearly two-thirds of full-time business education programs received
more applications in 2007 than in 2006.
Corporate recruiters are happy about the increase. Recruiters told GMAC the biggest
obstacle they face in hiring new MBAs is competition from other employers. Women and minority
applications are also on the rise. About 57 percent of full-time programs, and an equal
proportion of part-time programs, reported receiving more applications from women in 2007.
Almost half of full-time programs said applications from minorities increased. This increase
is in keeping with corporate demands for a larger pool of women and minority
candidates.
The survey shows that programs that make a special effort to recruit women have been
especially successful at increasing female applications. Full-time MBA programs that
actively recruit women receive an average of three times as many applicants as programs that
do not maintain outreach aimed at women.
The 2007 GMAC Application Trends Survey is based on responses from 445 MBA and other
graduate business education programs at 252 schools worldwide.
Fast Fact: Online MBA and management programs attract more women than
men.
The Reason: Women find online learning more convenient given their
dual roles as mothers and professionals.

Corinthian Agrees to $6.5 Lawsuit Settlement |
| Corinthian Schools has agreed to pay $6.5 million to settle a lawsuit alleging the
for-profit engaged in false advertising and unlawful business practices by presenting
inaccurate salary and employment information to its students. Corinthian, one of the nations
largest for-profit educational chains, offers diploma courses and degrees in health and high
profile careers to students at its 14 California campuses of Bryman College, Everest
College, and the National Institute of Technology.
The California Attorney General alleged that Corinthian engaged in unlawful and
fraudulent business practices, and that several of its programs did not meet the minimum
standards for promised subsequent employment. The settlement provides for $1.5 million in
debt cancellation and $4.3 million of refunds to former students. Corinthian must also cease
operation of 11 substandard programs offered in California in the medical tech career
area.
Consumers who believe they have been victimized by Corinthian or any other educational
programs operating in California are urged to submit a formal complaint to the Public
Inquiry Unit of the California Attorney General's Office.
Corinthian Colleges has been under investigation by the Attorney General in Florida
since 2005 for allegations that it's Florida Metropolitan University division (FMU), which
offers residential and online degrees, may have mislead students about the transferability
of its courses. Other allegations accuse FMU officials of grade changing in order to receive
government financial aid on behalf of students who might otherwise face academic dismissal.
FMU is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, but is
not regionally accredited. Many regionally accredited colleges do not accept ACICS
accredited learning as the equivalent of their own in tranfer.

Italian Press Blows Whistle on Fake Online College Accreditor |
| The Seborga Times, the official press of the tiny Italian Principality of Seborga, has
denounced a fake college accrediting agency supposedly operating from a basement storage
cellar in the center of that tiny Principality. The paper claims that the Antico
Principato di Seborgas Council for Distance Education, Culture and Faith and
Council of Accreditation is a scam. The Press could find no evidence that
either the Seborga Council (from the Mayor downward) or the Seborga Crown (from the Prince
downward) had ever issued this organization the permission to oversee college
accreditations. The "Council de Accreditation" claims to oversee the educational efficacy of
a number of e-universities including the now closed by legal action James Monroe
International University, Pebble Hills University, and a new USA initiative entitled the
DiUlus Institute and University.

World Almanac of Educational Technologies Seeks Authors |
 |
Ever wonder about the
prevalence of ed tech in China? Need a reliable summary of the educational
structure and teacher training system in Turkey? Curious about the barriers to
e-education implementation in Kenya?
The World Almanac of
Educational Technologies, a free Wiki style academic reference catalogs the answers to these
questions and invites ed tech experts worldwide to contribute entries to help build this
worldwide knowledge base.
The goal of the World Almanac (WAET) is to
provide insight into the uses of technological tools in education across the globe.
Though the chapters are organized around nations, the division is not strict. The editors
welcome contributions that inquire into the use of educational technologies by other forms
of political/social organization.
WAET is a scholarly, editor-reviewed publication.
Nevertheless, it intends to reach a wide audience of practitioners in the field of
education. Therefore its tone and design are more approachable and practical than
traditional journals and books in the field of educational technology.
Scholars and practitioners are encouraged to submit
chapters. Chapters are traditionally written by a pair: a scholar (professor, graduate
student) and a practitioner (teacher, student-teacher, assistant, administrator). This
pairing is not a necessary condition, though it is strongly encouraged that a local voice be
an integral part of the work.
In other words, chapters must be co-authored and co-edited by someone with
substantial living/practicing/educational experience in the country/region being discussed.
Though manuscripts will be accepted in English, you are encouraged to submit articles in
more than one language. The editors welcome inquires and questions regarding content and
format of the chapters.
The editors welcome individual cases as
well as nation-based reviews that illustrate technology use and barriers. Full submission guidelines are posted at the
Almanac's main site.
