American Intercontinental University Online has been placed on academic probation by its regional accrediting agency, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

AIU is owned by the for-profit Career Education Corporation and offers both bachelor and master degrees in high demand career areas such as business and IT. Career Education Corp. was the focus of a 2005 "60 Minutes" investigation into deceptive recruitment and placement strategies in use at for-profit schools in the USA. SACS cited multiple problems in academic accountability and student recruitment in taking the action against AIU earlier this month. The probation applies to all AIU's campuses and programs, both brick and mortar and online. AIU's probation will be reviewed by SACS again at the close of 2006.
