What Are CACREP Accredited Online Counseling Programs?

CACREP accredited online counseling programs are counseling or related educational programs that are recognized and licensed by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. CACREP accreditation ensures high-quality standards and promotes leadership amongst counseling and related educational fields. In addition, CACREP accreditation is exclusively recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the American Counseling Association (ACA), which further adds to its value.

Is CACREP Accreditation Included in All Online Counseling Programs?

While CACREP does accredit online counseling programs, accreditation is not guaranteed. Each program must undergo assessment and evaluation by CACREP. For online programs, the accreditation standards are the same as those for on-campus programs.

Not sure whether a program has CACREP approval? Then check out our breakdown of the cheapest CACREP-accredited programs online below. The best CACREP-accredited programs are also often some of the cheapest master’s in counseling, combining value and affordability.

Why is CACREP Accreditation Important For The Counseling Profession?

CACREP accreditation evaluates the quality and content of counseling programs across higher-education institutions, ensuring that they meet mandated counseling standards. Plus, CACREP counseling programs online evaluate the academic curriculum and ensure that it contains the necessary academic knowledge, counseling skill development, and coursework required to achieve a professional license. Imagine pursuing one of the cheapest CACREP-accredited programs online! You get all of the value of a professionally stable degree at a price that won’t break the bank!

Additionally, it provides that sense of reliability and surety to the student that the program they chose is credible and contains the appropriate skill set and knowledge, making the program a good choice financially and professionally. Schools that offer CACREP accredited online counseling programs are subjected to ongoing assessment to improve and maintain program quality. To conclude, the CACREP accredited programs ensure that students are thoroughly prepared to function as licensed counselors in private and public schools by the end of their studies.

What if My Counseling Program is Not CACREP Accredited?

Say your counseling program is not CACREP accredited. In this case, you may still qualify for counselor licensure in 48 out of 50 states plus the District of Columbia. However, depending on your state of residence or practice, you might need to complete a program accredited by a different group, such as:

  • The Alliance for Professional Counselors
  • National Association of School Psychologists
  • Master’s in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council
  • Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education

At the time of this writing, Kentucky and North Carolina both restrict initial counselor licensure to graduates of CACREP-accredited programs. If you already have counselor licensure, you do not need to complete another CACREP-accredited program to maintain your licensure in these states. The restrictions only apply to new graduates.

In addition, Ohio requires graduates of counseling programs in Ohio specifically to come from CACREP-accredited programs. This does not affect any graduates from other states. To summarize, if a program doesn’t have CACREP accreditation, it may not be a massive blow to your career – it all depends on the state in which you intend to practice.

Which Degrees Does CACREP Accredit?

CACREP accredits counseling programs at the Master’s level in the following areas:

Additionally, CACREP also accredits specific doctoral programs in Supervision and Counselor Education.

Is CACREP Accreditation Recognized Internationally?

CACREP gained recognition as an international accrediting body back in 1989 when it accredited three counseling programs at the British Columbia University. Over time, CACREP provided accreditation for counseling programs in universities around the US, Canada, Africa, and Asia, pushing it to expand its operations towards accreditation for major international universities.

How Long Does CACREP Accreditation Take?

Counseling and related educational programs seeking CACREP accreditation go through a rigorous testing procedure that ensures the program meets the profession’s nationwide standards. Such programs should first compare their existing state with the CACREP policies and standards as it would help determine the level of standards of the program.

Following this self-determination process, programs should submit a descriptive report demonstrating how they represent the CACREP standards. Programs are then subjected to an on-site visit, following the board of directors’ approval, who evaluate depending on the site team report, self-determination process, and the program’s response to any changes. After receiving the application, accreditation by CACREP usually takes around 12 to 18 months.

However, the mentioned duration is not fixed and can exceed up to two years in some cases, depending on time intervals, the number of applicants, and other factors. The CACREP Board schedules meetings twice a year, which are in July and January. These meetings are held to render decisions related to accreditation.

Is Liberty University CACREP Accredited?

Yes, Liberty University’s Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision is CACREP accredited. Furthermore, Liberty's Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is also accredited by CACREP.

The program provides the foundational knowledge necessary to earn state licensure and become a licensed professional counselor with a Christian worldview. Most of the program is 100% online. Is CACREP the Best Accreditation?

CACREP is one of the many popular accrediting bodies for mental health and counseling programs. Because many states require CACREP accreditation for licensed counselors, it is certainly the most practical type of accreditation to look for in online counseling programs.

If your program is CACREP accredited, you’ll be able to achieve legitimate licensure. However, note that CACREP doesn’t accredit psychology programs. It does, however, maintain standards and programs to help prepare students for LPC licensure. In short, if you want to become a counselor, CACREP is arguably a top choice for accreditation. It’s not strictly necessary to become a psychologist.

MPCAC vs. CACREP

MPCAC stands for the Master’s in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council. It’s an overall newer organization that arose in 2011 to provide curricular and quality guidelines for master’s degree programs in counseling and psychology.

Here’s the big difference between CACREP vs MPCAC. CACREP accredits master’s and doctoral level programs in counseling, while MPCAC accredits only master’s programs in counseling and psychology. In addition, no state requires MPCAC accreditation for licensed counselors. On the other hand, some states do require CACREP-accredited program completion. Still, since MPCAC accreditation meets licensure standards in most, if not all, states, MPCAC accreditation could still qualify you for counseling licensure.

COAMFTE vs. CACREP

COAMFTE is another more specialized accrediting agency. It’s official title is the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy. COAMFTE regulates graduate programs for marriage and family therapists. Its first standards were published in 1975.

So, CACREP accredits programs in many different counseling fields. Meanwhile, COAMFTE accredits marital and family therapy programs exclusively. Therefore, your state may require you to have graduated from an MFT program accredited by COAMFTE if you want to become a marriage and family therapist. But COAMFTE accreditation isn’t necessary if you want to become a different type of counselor or therapist.
