As an educator I have to agree with the online graduate degree program reviews posted before me here. This is a top online library science degree program. Compare it to the distance masters offered online at U Illinois Champlain Urbana. Syracuse University's School of Information Studies is a founding institution, along with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's Graduate School of Library and Information Science, of the Web-based Information Science Education (WISE) Consortium. WISE allows students enrolled in library and information science programs at participating institutions to take online courses at any other participating institution. It is ALA accredited of course and a standard setter for online education for librarians in the USA and abroad.

As a current student, I can honestly say that I have really enjoyed this program so far. The courses for this certificate are all offered online, which is convenient for many students who are approaching this as a second career. My professors in these courses offer open lines of communication. Even though I haven't met all of the students in person, I still feel that I have gotten to know them. Syracuse offers a great program that helps us to learn how to motivate students to engage in the research process and gain valuable lifelong information literacy skills.

The School of Information Studies (iSchool) at Syracuse University has been a home away from home for me. According to the U.S. News and World Report, the iSchool has been ranked #1 for 2009 in Information Systems. Not only are they an excellent program to be part of, they take care of their students interests and needs. As for the M.S. in Information Management (IM), the program is interdisciplinary in focus. It combines strategic management of information resources, organizational psychology, information economics, telecommunications policy, e-business, information technology (IT), as well as data management and retrieval. In summary, you will learn about business, technology, policy, and people from the best faculty in the industry. When it comes to financial aid, the iSchool make sure that all students are accomodated with some sort of aid (whether it is through scholarships and/or faculty assistantships). For example, in this academic year all students accepted to the IM program where offered 10 working hours per week with a faculty member. And finally, it is worth noting the non-stop networking possibilities a student has between faculty and alumni. Overall, it is a blessing to be a student of such program.

I have been really impressed by the outgoing, enthusiastic, and open-minded people in the Syracuse iSchool. Particularly amongst the LIS faculty, there is a huge push towards teaching students to be capable of handling change and tough situations. Students are encouraged to be innovative and to engage in local, national, and international endeavors and conversations. Though technology is not considered the be all and end all of librarianship at SU, it is not ignored and is readily available in the classrooms. It really is a fun program, with a lot of opportunities for students!
