Wake Technical Community College, also known as Wake Tech, is a 2 year community college and technical training institute, with campus locations through Wake County, NC. Wake Tech was founded as the Wake County Industrial Education Center in 1958, and when it opened, 304 students were enrolled, and today, over 20,440 students are enrolled. The institution received its current name in 1987. Wake Tech is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Wake Tech offers diplomas, certificates and associate degrees in science, applied science, general education, and non credit continuing education courses for personal and professional enrichment. The academic and training programs at Wake Tech are built on the values of respect, responsibility, critical thinking, accountability, collaboration and communication.
Wake Tech has five campuses which are the Main Campus, Health Sciences Campus, Northern Wake Campus, Public Safety Education Campus, and Western Wake Campus. The main campus, located in Raleigh, is the center of Wake Tech’s operations, and houses the schools technical programs that include culinary arts, automotive, architecture, cosmetology, computers and many additional programs. Students can take daytime, evening and weekend classes in non credit programs which include Associate in Science and Arts degree programs for transfer to four year colleges and universities. Computer labs, the Wake Tech gym, a library, individualized learning center for tutoring, bookstore and cafeteria are all located on the main campus, as are services that include admissions, financial aid, advising, student activities and disability support. Wake Tech’s Health Sciences Campus is located in Raleigh, near the Wake Medical Center, and offers credit and non-credit programs that prepare students for health related careers in areas such as dental hygiene, nursing, emergency medical services, therapeutic massage and more. Wake Tech has partnerships with Wake Med and other health care facilities in the Raleigh area that provide students with hands on training and work experience opportunities.
The Northern Wake Campus is situated on 121 acres and offers associate degrees for transfer, and continuing education classes that are held in the evenings and on weekends. Northern Wake is the first campus in the country to be certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as all-LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The North Wake Campus houses a library, bookstore, volleyball and tennis facilities, biology and chemistry labs, and offers student support services such as counseling, financial aid, tutoring and admissions. The Public Safety Education Campus at Wake Tech is one of the nation’s most advanced facilities, and some of its training features include a high-tech forensics lab, mock courtroom and jail, and an incident command center. Fire and rescue personnel, law enforcement and corrections officers, Homeland Security personnel and EMS technicians train on the Public Safety Education Campus, and the campus offers Associate in Applied Science degree programs in fire protection, technology, and criminal justice. The Western Wake Campus houses Wake Tech’s Business and Industry Center, which offers professional development, entrepreneurship and apprenticeship programs, customized corporate training and business support. Associate in Arts degrees for transfer and non credit courses in areas that include computer skills, art, horticulture and human resource development are offered at the Western Wake Campus. Wake Tech operates an Adult Education Center that offers programs to assist adults with improving their basic reading, writing and math skills. The Adult Education Center offers adult high school and GED programs and English as a Second Language and compensatory education classes for intellectually disabled adults.
Wake Tech offers an online learning program that provides an alternative to taking classes in the traditional classroom environment. Online courses are delivered through the Blackboard system. Degrees, diplomas and certificates can be earned online. Wake Tech’s online programs include degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Students can earn degrees in Accounting, Associate in Arts, Association in General Education, Business Administration, Business Administration: HUman Resources Management, Computer Information Technology, Computer Programming, Criminal Justice Technology, Database Management - Administrator, Fire Protection Technology, Global Logistics Technology, Industrial Engineering Technology, Medical Office Administration, Networking Technology, Office Administration, and Web Technologies.
Wake Tech offers a variety of student life activities that include clubs and activities, athletic programs, and volunteerism and leadership opportunities. Clubs and organizations include: Campus Crusade for Christ, Criminal Justice Club, Printmaking Club, Game Development Club, Social Sciences Club, Wake Review Literary Magazine and Club, and the Iron Eagle Club.
