The University of Saint Mary is a small, private liberal arts university located in Leavenworth, Kansas. The University of Saint Mary was originally founded and sponsored by The Sisters of Charity, who arrived in Leavenworth in 1853 and began teaching area children. A short time later, a boarding school named St. Mary’s Academy was opened in Leavenworth by the Sisters of Charity, and in 1870, St. Mary’s Academy was moved to the current location of the University of St. Mary. In 1923, St. Mary College was established as a junior college for women, and in 1930 it became a four year college. The institution became a residential, co-educational facility in 1988. The University of Mary strives in educating its students to become business and community leaders with strong decision making and problem solving abilities.
The University of Saint Mary consists of two campuses. The main campus, located in Leavenworth houses the universities undergraduate classrooms, residential halls and primary academic and administrative offices. The Overland Park campus, located in Overland Park Kansas is available for students desiring to complete accelerated undergraduate completion programs and graduate degree programs.

Masters of Business Administration (MBA) are offered with concentrations in Health Care Management, Enterprise Risk Management, Finance, Marketing & Advertising Management, Human Resource Management and General Management. MBA concentrations are available at the Overland Park campus and online. Additional graduate programs include Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology, Master of Arts in Education and Master of Arts in Teaching which is only available online. The University of Saint Mary offers one doctoral program, which is the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). Online degree programs including Master of Arts in Teaching, RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Business Administration offer a convenient and flexible learning opportunity for students. Undergraduate degree completion programs re available in the areas of Applied Psychology, Business Administration, Child Development Education, Elementary Education, Interdisciplinary Studies and RN-to-BSN, which is only available online.
The University of St. Mary offers a First-Year Experience program to all new students. The classes that students take as part of the FYE program lay the foundation for their future success in college. The multidisciplinary, hands on project enables students to develop study skills that will help them excel, enhance critical thinking skills, increase writing ability and learn through performing services. Through participation in the FYE program, students perform services that benefit the community as well as themselves. Students in the FYE program are able to connect with other first year students through participating in social events that take place throughout the semester. A study abroad program is available to St. Mary’s students and provides them with the chance to study abroad for a summer, semester or full academic year. Some of the countries that St. Mary’s students recently visited include Spain, Japan, Ireland, Italy, Greece, France and Germany. Preparing to study abroad can be a difficult process and students interested in studying abroad are encouraged to start planning as early as possible.
St. Mary’s encourages student involvement in campus activities. Students can choose to participate in a variety of athletics, intramurals and student organizations. St. Mary’s University is deeply rooted in the Catholic faith, but also welcomes students of all faiths. Spiritual opportunities such as daily mass, discussion of the Bible and the opportunity to reflect on moral and justice issues are some the things offered by Saint Mary’s campus ministry.
