The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. 95 percent of UMUC’s undergraduate students are part time students. UMUC, one of the country’s largest distance learning institutions, educates more than 80,000 students located around the world and accepts one hundred percent of its applicants. Educational courses are offered in classroom and distance learning formats as well as online.
UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.
In addition to the campus location in Adelphi, satellite campuses exist across the state of Maryland, in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area and also in the Middle East, Asia and in Europe. In the Baltimore-Washington area, 21 locations, including the University of Maryland, College Park campus hold daytime, evening and weekend classes for UMUC students. The UMUC satellite campus locations offer services such as library and computer facilities and academic advising. UMUC also offers courses at additional university locations in Maryland including the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown and at the Universities of Shady Grove. UMUC’s global locations in the Middle East, Asia and Europe offer distance learning courses on military bases to military service member and their families and also to federal employees and contractors. On site classes taught by instructors are offered in addition to the distance learning courses at 133 overseas U.S. military bases located in 22 countries. UMUC has an estimated enrollment of 50,000 active duty military service members.
The UMUC online learning program benefits students that have a busy lifestyle that does not allow them to attend classes in a traditional campus setting. Online learning makes it possible for students to obtain a degree while balancing other responsibilities such as working and raising a family. Students can access their courses at times that are convenient to them, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.
UMUC offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. Thirty two bachelor’s degree programs and 48 undergraduate certificates are offered through UMUC’s Undergraduate School, and the university’s Graduate School offers 18 master’s programs, 38 graduate certificates and a Doctor of Management degree. Undergraduate classes are offered in both a classroom based format as well as online, and a majority of the graduate level programs are also available both in the classroom and online. UMUC’s most popular majors include computer and information sciences and support services; psychology; homeland security, law enforcement, firefighting and related protective services; and business, management, marketing and related support services.
UMUC offers support services to assist students throughout their academic careers. These services, which include tutoring, writing assistance, job search resources and career service resources can be accessed entirely online. Student life activities are available to provide students with an opportunity to connect to the UMUC community, and include honor societies, student government and academic clubs.
UMUC is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. UMUC’s Master of Distance Education program is accredited by the European Foundation for Management Development-Technology Enhanced Learning, and the universities Master of Business Administration program is accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education.
