The origin of Union Institute & University dates back to 1964, when a group of liberal arts colleges joined to form a consortium known as The Union for Research and Experimentation in Higher Education, and consisted of a group of colleges that were experimenting with alternative education in the 1960’s. In 1969, The Union for Research and Experimentation in Higher Education changed its name to The Union for Experimenting Colleges and Universities and focused on offering educational opportunities to non-traditional students. The Union for Experimenting Colleges eventually founded a graduate school, known as The Union Graduate School. In 1986 the school’s name changed to The Union Institute and purchased Vermont College. In 2001, The Union Institute became Union Institute and University.
