Union College, a small, private four year liberal arts college, is located in the Appalachian mountain town of Barboursville, KY. Barboursville is a town that is bordered by four state parks, and the Union College campus is situated on approximately one hundred acres. It is located within close proximity to the cities of Lexington, KY and Knoxville, TN.
Union College is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and was founded in 1879 when thirty-five local resident stockholders joined together to create a college that would help the local area grow and thrive and would create opportunities for their families.
Union College provides a well-rounded academic experience for its students and offers programs that enhance intellectual, social and personal transformation through pursuing wisdom, knowledge, spiritual growth and service. Union College’s liberal arts foundation foster ethical and intellectual development and teaches students to make informed decisions and wise choices. Union College follows the belief that there is a connection between service, intellectual growth and spiritual development, and has a desire to develop a community that studies the social and intellectual component of the Christian faith. Union offers undergraduate Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees, and Master of Arts degrees in Education and Psychology. There are nine undergraduate academic divisions at Union and thirty-two academic majors are offered. An estimated 830 undergraduate and 500 graduate students are enrolled at Union. An online program is available to students that are not able to take classes in the traditional classroom environment. State of the art learning facilities including a technology center with wireless internet access, technology and multimedia support services and computer labs enhance learning experience of Union students. Almost 75 percent of the classes at Union consist of less than twenty-five students. The most popular undergraduate majors include psychology, parks, recreation and leisure facilities management, curriculum and instruction and business administration and management. Union College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
To assist students with meeting their academic goals, the Office of Student Support Services offers services to meet the needs of Union College students. These services include the Freshman Seminar, an academic resource center and the Office of Career Planning and Placement. The Freshman Seminar is a course that students take in their first year that teaches students what they need to know about college life, and what is needed to be successful. The academic resource center offers supplemental instruction, tutoring and career, academic and personal counseling. The Office of Career Planning and Placement offers assistance with preparation for graduate school, resume and cover letter writing, career planning, internships and job searches. A writing center is open seven days a week, and offers both private tutorials and sessions on reading, writing and public speaking. The writing center also has weekly writing workshops.
Union College is a G.I. Jobs Military Friendly School, and offers resources to Veterans wishing to make the transition from military life to student life.
In addition to learning in the classroom environment, Union students have the opportunity to participate in athletic, student life and other programs that complement their academic learning experience. Students can participate in activities that are focused on religious matters, leadership service and learning. The Appalachian Wilderness Club and Union College outdoors programs offer students the opportunity to participate in wilderness related activities such as exploring nearby state and national parks which have access to mountain biking, camping, caving, kayaking and climbing. Opportunities for internships, studying abroad and service related travel also give students the chance to expand their learning outside of the classroom setting.
