School Details

Southwestern Christian University is a four-year, private liberal arts institution of higher education located in Bethany, Oklahoma that is affiliated with the Pentecostal Holiness Church.

The school was originally founded in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1946. Southwestern Christian University focuses its curriculum on the Bible and the International Pentecostal Holiness Church’s teachings. At first, SCU operated as a junior college and was known as Southwestern Bible College. The school grew to be the largest within the Pentecostal Holiness Church. In 1981, the university moved to its current location and revamped the institution’s mission. The school downsized the large junior college atmosphere and focused on becoming a Ministry training college. As a result, the school changed its name to Southwestern College of Christian Ministries. However, in the early 2000s, with the addition of graduate programs and expanded areas of specialization in the late 1990s, the school adopted its current name. Southwestern Christian University is regionally accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Southwestern Christian University is a small institution with a little under 700 undergraduate students. A little more than 50 percent of students return to SCU for their second year and just under 25 percent of students graduate within six years. Just over half of undergraduate students are reported as adult learners, age 25 and older. Although the majority of the student body is Caucasian, 42 percent of students are African American, Hispanic, Native American, or Asian. Almost 35 percent of students are considered to be in-state students and about 65 percent of students classify as non-Oklahoma residents.

Due to SCU’s status as a private institution, tuition and fees are the same for each individual, regardless of the student’s state residency. The estimated cost of annual tuition and fees as a full-time student is $14,025. Part-time students’ tuition is determined by the amount of credits the student is enrolled in. Individuals qualify as part-time students if they take less than 12 credits in a semester. Cost per credit hour as a part-time student at SCU is $425.

Deciding how to finance tuition costs can be a stressful decision. However, SCU offers several financial aid resources to assist students in their higher education aspirations. At Southwestern Christian University, students can apply for scholarships, federal work study programs, Federal Financial Aid, grants, and private loans. SCU offers both need and non need-based aid. Some need-based factors are determined by religious affiliation, state residency, and academics. Students can also utilize several tuition payment plan options such as paying via credit card or in installments. Students who apply for Federal Financial Aid should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid as soon as possible after January 1st.

Southwestern Christian University offers degree programs at the associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degree level. Students can earn degrees within the Schools of Arts and Sciences, Professional Studies, and Adult & Graduate Studies. An associate’s degree at SCU requires a minimum of 64 credit hours to complete the program. Students who wish to earn their bachelor’s degree must complete a minimum of 128 credit hours. Due to the specialized nature of master’s programs, students could be required to complete a minimum amount of credit hours ranging from 36 to 98 credits.

Southwestern Christian University also supports the Bachelor of Professional Leadership, offered completely online. Integrating Christ-centered philosophies, students have the option to concentrate their degree in Business, Management, Social Services, or Christian Leadership. This degree option is ideal for the working professional requiring added flexibility.
