Salem International University was founded in 1888 by the Seventh Day Baptist Church and continues today as a private institution of higher learning located in Salem, West Virginia.
Throughout the years, the school maintained its curriculum with programs in liberal arts, teacher education and nursing. In 1989, SIU formed an alliance with Teikyo University in Tokyo, Japan to establish international prestige. The alliance ended in 2000 when Teikyo University was purchased by investors from Singapore and the school’s name changed to its present day title. Today, Salem is regionally accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees along with various certificates.
In addition to academics, SIU has a variety of extracurricular programs which students are recommended to get involved in. There are around 20 student clubs and organizations on-campus including two social and three service/honor Greek organizations and numerous social clubs. There are also many athletic opportunities available to those students who enjoy sports. There are a little over 800 total students attending SIU. The student body is quite diverse with a majority of its students representing foreign countries.
Salem International Univeristy school has an open admissions policy with no entrance exams required. Classes start more often at SIU due to the monthly structure and students are able to decide which academic route they wish to take easily with help from the admissions office. Applicants can apply online and then will be contacted by an admissions representative to assist in the admissions process.
Salem offers various degree programs which include the following: Associate of Science in Business Administration, Associate of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Management, HR Management, Sports Management, International Business), Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, and Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice. SIU also offers a Bachelor of Science in Education, which prepares teachers to earn their license and enter the teaching profession. This program focuses mainly on secondary education instruction with specializations in Social Sciences, Health, and Physical Education. The School of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a certificate in Practical Nursing. In addition, SIU offers graduate level programs to earn a Master of Business Administration (International Business, Health Care Management), Master of Education (Educational Leadership), and Master of Education (Curriculum and Instruction). Some of the highest demanded programs offered include Business, Education, Information Technology and Criminal Justice.
DISTANCE AND ONLINE EDUCATION
All academic programs including distance learning are delivered in a monthly format which is ideal for those students who are on a time crunch and need to finish their degree at a quicker pace. There are also programs online that lead to associate’s, bachelor’s, and master degrees.
Financial aid is available to those students who qualify. Qualification is determined through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which all aid applicants are required to fill out. Additional fees are not included. Aid is available through grants, loans, scholarships and work-study opportunities. Around 99 percent of students receive some kind of financial aid in the form of grants or scholarship and 82 percent of students take out Federal student loans.
