Saint Mary's University of Minnesota is a private, co-educational, Lasallian Catholic institution located in the town of Winona, Minnesota.
Since its founding in 1912 by Bishop Patrick R. Heffron, the school has remained affiliated with the De La Salle Christian Brothers and the Roman Catholic Church. Throughout the years, the school has grown to encompass multiple campuses including two international campuses in Jamaica and Kenya. Today, the school is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges & Schools.
The total enrollment is around 5,900 students and the gender ratio is 50/50. The geographic makeup of students consists of students who represent Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin and other US states as well as many foreign countries. The school has a team of dedicated faculty who are passionate about providing the highest quality education to their students. Within the undergraduate programs, there are around 128 total faculty members; 93 full-time, 78 with terminal degrees, and 61 with tenure. The student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1 which provides students with a more personalized learning environment. The graduate program has 461 professors who are experts in their field.
In addition to academics, SMUM has close to 10 student clubs and organizations on campus ranging from Student Government Association to performing arts and sports clubs. The school also has 21 NCAA Division III intercollegiate teams.
Admission to SMUM is straightforward. Applicants must fill out the application form which is available in the form of online, printable, Common Application, and Universal College application. Applicants must also submit high school transcripts sent directly from the awarding institution, ACT/SAT scores, a 250-word essay, and a letter of recommendation.
SMUM offers a wide variety of different degrees programs at the bachelors’, masters’, and doctoral degrees. Students may select from 55 majors, minors, and pre-professional programs in the undergraduate program. The undergraduate school offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. The School of Graduate and Professional Programs offers a Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Education, Master of Business Administration, Master of African Studies (Nairobi only), Education Specialist, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Psychology, plus professional, undergraduate & graduate certificates. One of the most unique aspects of the school is their Lasallian Education program. Continuing the work of Saint John Baptist de la Salle, the school developed a program of Christian education in which teachers assist parents in the educational, ethical and religious formation of their children. The school is a Lasallian and a Catholic institution that reflects in their curriculum.
ONLINE AND DISTANCE EDUCATION
Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota offers online degree programs in order to help nurture and empower students beyond the physical borders of their brick and mortar campuses. They offer nine online programs that are career-oriented and designed specifically for the busy working adult professional. Their programs include, but are not limited to: Master of Science in Project Management, Master of Science in Accountancy, Master of Arts in Human Resource Management, Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership, and master of Education in Learning Design and Technology.
COSTS AND FINANCIAL AID
The base tuition and fees is estimated to be around is $28,320. Additional fees are not included. For those students living on-campus, room & board is around $7440 in addition to the base tuition price. Around 83 percent of students live on-campus. Financial aid is available for those students who qualify. Qualification is determined through filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). About 96 percent of students receive some form on financial aid so all students are encouraged to apply. Total annual amount of aid distributed is $30 million, and $15 million is provided by St. Mary’s. Aid can be received either through loans, grants, scholarships, or work-study.
