Saint Martin's University is a private, liberal arts university located in Lacey, Washington; it is one of the 14 Benedictine colleges and universities in the United States.
The school was founded in 1895 as an all-boys school boarding school by Monks of the Benedictine Order. Shortly after in 1910, St. Martin’s began to offer college courses and became a degree-granting institution in 1940. The institution became coeducational in 1965 and, in the 1980s, graduate programs were added. In 2005, this institution officially became Saint Martin’s University. Today, St. Martin’s is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
SMU offers 23 baccalaureate programs and 6 graduate programs. It is best known for civil & mechanical engineering, business administration, and education programs. SMU’s academic programs are organized into four divisions: the College of Engineering, the College of Business, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the College of Education & Professional Psychology. Saint Martin’s has an Extended Learning Division, which primarily focuses on helping military professionals transition to civilian life by offering professionals programs that supplement the skills and knowledge they acquired during their time in the service. These academic programs include programs offered through the Joint Base Lewis-McChord military bases like Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, a variety of teacher education and certification programs, and Bachelors of Arts in Accounting, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, History, Political Science, Psychology, and English/Writing. At the Centralia extension campus of Saint Martin’s, students can pursue degree programs like the Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and a variety of teacher education and certification programs. One can earn degrees and certificates in teacher education in a completely online format through Saint Martin’s University. It is important to note that in addition to overall accreditation, the education programs at Saint Martin’s University are accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council.
SMU has a total enrollment of 1,823 students and a student body ratio of 49% male and 51% female. The school has a reputation for being a more student-focused and diverse university with the student-to-faculty ratio at 12:1 and a minority student population of 42%. 10% of students are international. SMU also offers study abroad programs in 23 different countries. About 62% of courses have fewer than 20 students. Professors also serve as academic advisers and teach all classes. Over 75% of the student body is from Washington State. For those students who commute, there are many services and resources to support them. In addition to academics, there are many extracurricular activities and events that students get involved in. There are over 30 clubs, intramurals and organizations on-campus. The 13 varsity sport teams play in the NCAA Division II.

Saint Martin’s University has a 82% acceptance rate and the application can be completed completely online. Undergraduate tuition is $28,740 per year. Financial aid is available to those students who qualify. Qualification is determined through the Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) that all applicants are required to submit. 98% of students receive some form of financial aid. Aid is administered either through loans, scholarships, grants and work-study opportunities. Merit scholarships range from $4000-$16,000. The average financial aid awarded is $23,612.
