Founded in 1963 and located in Fairfield, Connecticut, the private not-for-profit Sacred Heart University combines “scholarship” with “spiritual and ethical values” that is reflected in both its mission and curriculum. More than 6,000 students are enrolled in the University and Sacred Heart maintains a student-faculty ratio of 14:1. SHU is one of the largest Catholic universities in New England, second only to Boston College. The University operates four campuses across New England and offers programs in Luxembourg. Sacred Heart University is regionally accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. In addition, the University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing degrees are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
Sacred Heart offers four online degree programs:
- RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- RN to Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
- Master of Science in Applied Psychology
Admissions criteria for each program varies, but generally requires the application and fee, a minimum GPA ranging from the 2.5 GPA for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing to a minimum 3.0 GPA in the remaining degrees, letters of recommendation, a statement of professional goals, a resume, and miscellaneous documentation like nursing licenses, proof of undergraduate degrees, and potential GRE scores. Nursing student applicants must also submit proof of malpractice insurance.
Tuition rates at Sacred Heart University are degree specific and may vary according to the number of transfer credits. Tuition ranges from $515 per credit hour for the RN to BSN degree to $725 per credit hour for the Master’s of Science in Applied Psychology degree.
Financial aid is available for U.S. Citizens and permanent residents admitted into a matriculating degree program who maintain satisfactory academic progress and do not have prior defaults on student loans. SHU supports federal aid including, the Federal Direct Stafford Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans along with the Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loans. Tax credits and deductions may also be applicable for select students and private loans are also available. In addition, SHU awards scholarships to students based on merit and need. SHU sponsors federal grants including the:
