Midland University is a four-year, private, liberal arts institution of higher learning located in Fremont, Nebraska that was founded in 1883.
The school first originated in Atchison, Kansas, and later moved to Fremont in 1919. Then in 1962, Midland and Luther Junior College merged, transitioning to Midland Lutheran College. Once again, in 2010, the school adopted a new title, Midland University. Today, Midland University retains its affiliation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. MU’s mission is for its students “to learn and lead in the world with purpose.” The following core values form the foundation of Midland University: Faith, Quality, Respect, Stewardship, and Learning.
MU is surrounded by a historic downtown with many small shops and the campus is only about a 25-minute drive from the city of Omaha. The campus features a library, planetarium, and bookstore. Students participate in various organizations, art programs, intramurals, and more than 25 varsity athletic teams. Organizations include academic groups, theater, music, community service, and Greek life. Faith based groups participate in student-led bible studies and worship.

Midland University offers undergraduate and graduate programs. The most popular undergraduate programs are education, business, nursing/ medical sciences, and human performance. Graduate degrees include programs in business and education. High school students are permitted to take dual enrollment courses for college credit. Special learning opportunities include: ROTC (Army), teacher certification, distance education, study abroad, and weekend/evening college.
Midland University evaluates all applicants on an individual basis and uses a rolling admissions deadline. To apply, students must submit a completed application, standardized test scores, and official transcripts. International students will need to provide proof of English proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS score) and a copy of a passport and visa are also required. Midland University also recognizes credit from regionally accredited colleges and universities for transfer credits. The following requirements are necessary for all degree programs:
- Minimum 2.0 GPA
- Top 50 percent of class
- Minimum 20 ACT of 940-970 SAT
DISTANCE AND ONLINE EDUCATION
Online opportunities are also available. Midland’s Department of Nursing supports an online program that begins online courses every eight weeks. MBA classes feature hybrid formats, where students meet in person every third weekend during seven nine-week terms and join live, online classes during the weeks when they are not on campus.

Over 98 percent of full-time students receive financial aid assistance. After acceptance into MU, students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (school code 002553). The form should be completed after January 1 and award packages will be mailed after March 1. Scholarships available include: Anderson Leader, Presidential Scholarship, Board of Directors Scholarship, Honor Scholarship, Athletic Scholarships and Grants, Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships, and Performing and Fine Arts Scholarships and Grants. Added financial assistance for students includes on and off-campus employment. Financial aid opportunities for veterans include the Freedom Scholarship, the GI Bill (Post 9/11), and the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Program.
