Michigan State University is a public, land-grant research university located in East Lansing, Michigan. Students at Michigan State can pursue degrees in subjects such as telecommunication, hospitality, education, journalism and management. Michigan State University offers degrees at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level as well as post-secondary certificates. Founded in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, Michigan State University is the first land-grant university in the country and was originally an agricultural college. In 1861, the university changed its name to the State Agricultural College. In 1870, women were permitted to attend the university; however, they were unable to live on campus like their male counterparts until 1896 when a male dorm was converted to house female students. In 1909, the university once again and became known as the Michigan Agricultural College. Throughout the 20th century, the university experienced a time of great expansion. The then agricultural college began to build programs in education, business, medicine and many other areas of study becoming more than just an agricultural institution. In 1964, the university changed its name to its current designation of Michigan State University. Michigan State University is regionally accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. 

Michigan State University is a large institution with about 36,500 undergraduate students and approximately 11,000 graduate students. MSU’s retention rate is high with about 90 percent of students returning for their second year. Much of MSU’s student body qualifies as full time students but about 10 percent of students are part time. The average ago of MSU students is 20 years old. Almost all of MSU students are from Michigan with only nine percent of students living out of state. The gender ratio is even at about 50:50 with just a slightly greater percentage of women. About 70 percent of students identify as Caucasian, four percent identify as Asian, seven percent identify at African American and three percent of students identify as Hispanic. 

As a public university, tuition and fees vary depending on in- or out-of-state student status. In-state tuition and fees is about $12,600 a year and out of state tuition and fees is about $32,500. Part-time students typically pay tuition on a per credit basis rather than as lump fee. In-state part time tuition cost per credit hour is about $420 and out-of-state part time cost per credit hour is about $1,000. With tuition at such a premium today, students should be familiar with MSU’s financial aid opportunities. Students at MSU can receive grants or scholarships, apply for loans and also federal financial aid. Of the 65 percent of students who applied for need-based aid about half received it in the form of scholarships and grants and the other half through loans and jobs. About 80 percent of students were judged to have need and over 75 percent of students were offer aid. Twelve percent of students had their full need met. The average financial package received as a first year student is about $11,500 and the average indebtedness at graduation is around $24,000.

Students at MSU have a multitude of programs to choose from such as advertising, chemistry, food science, kinesiology, marketing and many others. Students have a wide variety of programs available to them to ensure students can find the right program for them. Students pursuing a bachelor’s degree must complete an average of 120 credit hours and is normally completed in four years as a full time student. Master’s programs require students to complete an average of 30 credit hours and programs can be completed in an average of 18 months as a full time student. MSU’s doctoral programs vary significantly due to their specialized nature and can range from 60 to 75 credit hours in addition to a thesis.
