Madison Area Technical College is a four-year public college located in Madison, Wisconsin that serves parts of 12 counties in south-central Wisconsin: Adams, Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Green, Iowa, Jefferson, Juneau, Marquette, Richland, Rock, and Sauk. The school has grown tremendously from its foundation in 1912 and is now one of the largest 16 schools in the Wisconsin Technical College System. MATC has developed formal agreements with a number of four-year colleges and universities, which enable students to transfer the credits earned in an associate degree program to a specific institution.
Madison Area Technical College has 16,405 students (16,347 undergraduate students and 85 graduate students) and 1,619 faculty members, giving the school a student-to-faculty ratio of 13 to 1. Of all students, 66% study part-time and 34% study full-time. The student body is comprised of 56% female students and 44% male students. Most students are White (75%) and the remaining students are Black, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, or multi-racial. Madison Area Technical College has students of many ages; 48% of students are 24 years old and under and 52% of students are 25 years old or older. Almost all students (97%) are from Wisconsin and 3% of students come from out-of-state. The overall graduation rate is 35%and the overall transfer-out rate is 6% for students beginning their studies in Fall 2008. By gender, the overall graduation rate is 34% for males and 36% for females. Of all faculty members, 442 members teach full-time and 1,177 teach part-time.
Students can choose from associate’s degrees, technical diplomas, and certificates in more than 144 programs. Accelerated programs are available if students are interested in reducing time of completion. These programs are completed in six weeks with about 10-15 hours of work outside of class each week. Trade apprenticeships and adult continuing education classes are available as well.
Madison Area Technical College has eight convenient locations in Madison, WI, including: Truax Campus, Downtown Campus, South Campus, West Campus, Commercial Avenue Campus, Fire Service Campus, McAllen/Cisco Networking Academy, and the T.E.C. Center. The four regional campuses include: Fort Atkinson, Portage, Reedsburg, and Watertown.
Student life consists of student organizations and sports. Baseball, basketball, golf, and soccer are available for male sports and basketball, softball, and volleyball are available for women’s sports. Special learning opportunities include: distance learning, study abroad, and weekend/evening classes. Student services offered include: remedial tutoring, academic counseling, career counseling, employment services, placement services, and on-campus daycare (for students’ children only).
Tuition for in-state students costs $3,654 and costs $5,068 for out-of-state students. Books and supplies are not included in class price and are estimated to cost $1,400 yearly. On-campus housing is not available. Off-campus housing costs $8,040 per year with $3,346 of other living expenses. Financial aid is available to students active in an eligible associate degree, college transfer or technical diploma program whose enrollment status is at least half-time. Aid can come in the form of federal aid, state aid, and scholarships. Before receiving aid, you must fill out a FAFSA form to determine if you are eligible to receive financial aid. It is encouraged to begin the FAFSA process even before the acceptance process is complete because it can take 2-6 weeks for funding to be transferred and available funds are limited. The financial aid priority deadline is April 15.
To enroll, you must pay the application fee of $30. Madison Area Technical College uses open enrollment, meaning that everyone who meets the requirements of the School will be accepted.
