Limestone College is a four-year, private, non-denominational Christian, liberal arts college located in Gaffney, South Carolina. Limestone was established by Dr. Thomas Curtis and his son in 1845 as the first women’s school in the state as well as in the nation. The school became completely co-ed in the 1960’s. Limestone College is the third oldest college in South Carolina. Greenville and Charlotte are both about 45 minutes away from the main college campus. The college has expanded with branch campuses in Yemassee, SC, Greer, SC, Charleston, SC, Kingstree, SC, Graniteville, SC, Florence, SC, and Columbia, SC, that offer evening classes. The college offers evening courses at its Extended Campus locations in these locations. Limestone College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Limestone College programs lead to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Social Work, Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Masters in Business Administration degrees. Limestone offers students almost 40 majors in four different divisions of study: Arts and Letters, Natural Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Professional Studies. The most popular program by far is Business. The school also serves a growing number of college-aged students with disabilities such as dyslexia and AD/HD.
Limestone College has 3,411 students and 175 faculty members, giving the university a 22 to 1 student-to-faculty ratio. Of all faculty members, 93 teach full-time and 82 teach part-time. Over 80% of all faculty at Limestone hold a terminal degree in their field. About 70% of undergraduate students study full-time and 30% study part-time. The student body contains 62% female students and 38% male students. About 51% of all students are black with the remaining students being white (43%), Hispanic (2%), or uncategorized (4%). About 37% of students are ages 24 and under with 63% of students being ages 25 and above. About 64% of students are from South Carolina and 36% are from out-of-state. The school primarily serves students from South Carolina and the Eastern states. The retention rate for first-time, full-time students is 59% and the retention rate for first-time, part-time students is 43%. The overall graduation rate is 41%.
Special learning opportunities at Limestone College include: ROTC (Army), teacher certification, distance education, and weekend/evening college. Students have access to services such as: remedial tutoring, academic counseling, career counseling, employment services for students, placement services for graduates of this institution, and on-campus daycare. On-campus activities include over 20 student clubs and organizations, the Limestone College Yearbook Staff, sports, and a student literary magazine. Clubs and organizations are based on the following: academics, religion, leadership, music, theatre, and special interest affiliations. The Limestone “Saints”, whose team colors are blue and gold, compete in NCAA Division II in the Conference Carolinas, (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track, and volleyball), the Bluegrass Mountain Conference (swimming), and independent tournaments (field hockey, wrestling, football). Of all alumni, twelve student-athletes have gone on to play professionally in their sport, with seven of those signing professional baseball contracts. A football team is set to begin in 2014.
Tuition costs $21,000 per year and books and other supplies are estimated to cost $2,304 per year. The average tuition per year for a graduate student is $10,800 with $150 in annual fees. Tuition payment plans are offered. Financial aid is offered in the form of state grants, federal grants, scholarships, and loans. To qualify to receive financial aid, you must complete a FAFSA form and be evaluated to be in financial need. Approximately 96% of those attending Limestone College receive financial aid.
