Since its founding in 1923, the well-noted public research institute, Lamar University has continued growing.  With the main campus located in Beaumont, Texas, over 14,000 students attend Lamar University. The University has invested thirteen million dollars into research funding and houses eleven grant-funded research centers in Texas.  It also serves as a "Military Friendly School," especially through the development of its distance learning programs.  Moreover, the accelerated five and eight week terms the online branch of the school has designed eases the learning of adult students juggling coursework and careers. Lamar University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate's, Baccalaureate, Master's, and Doctorate degrees.

Lamar University coordinates a distance learning program that incorporates online learning for active duty military personnel, working adults, and Texas high school students desiring to earn dual credits.  LU Online undergraduate programs offer ten different degree options in the fields of Applied Arts and Sciences, General Studies, Computer Sciences, Industrial Technology, Criminal Justice, Nursing, Business and Communication. With multiple start dates, students can tailor classes to fit their busy schedules.  For example, Criminal Justice are available in either eight or fifteen week formats while other courses can be achieved through LU Online's Accelerated Program in five, eight or fifteen week formats. Applicants must submit proof of high school graduation along with SAT/ACT scores.

The University also offers graduate degree and certification programs for those desiring to advance their studies.  Master's degrees are offered in the areas of Education Administration, Teacher Leadership, Educational Technology, School Counseling, Health Promotion and Nursing, and Criminal Justice.  Lamar also allows students to gain a Doctorate of Education in Education Leadership via online studies and also provides Preparation courses for ESL, Principal and Superintendent programs. Applicants will need to submit proof of an undergraduate degree, as well as GRE or GMAT scores.

At this time, Lamar University is authorized to offer the online program to Texas and the following out-of-state students in which the University has been granted an exemption: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Tuition costs for online courses begin for the undergraduate level at $150 and $201 per semester hour for in-state and out-of-state students, respectively. The typical cost for graduate classes is $705 and $831 per semester hour for in-state and out-of-state students, respectively. Financial aid is awarded to qualifying students at Lamar in the forms of grants, loans, scholarships or work-study. Federal and state aid programs include the Veterans Benefits Program, Federal Pell Grants, Stafford and Perkins Loans, along with the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Texas Public Education Grant and the Texas Grant. The University also awards institutional and private aid providing more than one thousand scholarship opportunities.

Lamar developed the Center for Military Services to support military servicemembers in their distance education endeavors and was recently named a "Military Friendly School" by the G.I. Jobs and Military Advanced Education Magazines. The University is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Consortium and the SOC Degree Network System and has approval at the Bachelor's degree level. Multiple scholarships are available for servicememebers, military spouses and dependent children.
