The Fashion Institute of Technology is a public, four-year institution of higher learning located in New York, New York. Founded in 1944, FIT is the one of the top five fashion schools across the globe. The school originally began as a small institution, offering subjects such as scientific management, liberal arts and design. In 1951, FIT became the second State University of New York (SUNY) junior college. In 1975, the school received permission to grant bachelor’s degrees and just two years later also received permission to grant master’s degrees. From its establishment in 1944 to today, the school has grown to comprise an entire city block. Some notable alumni of FIT include Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors, Reem Acra, Calvin Klein and many more. The Fashion Institute of Technology is regionally accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Despite the schools had modest beginnings, the school has grown to have almost 10,000 undergraduate students and a little more than 200 graduate students. The student satisfaction rate at FIT is very high with 85 percent of students returning for their second year. The gender ratio at FIT is significantly disproportionate with the student body made up of 85 percent females and just 15 percent males. Almost half of the student body is Caucasian, and the remaining 50 percent are comprised of Hispanic, Asian and African American ethnicities. The average age of the entire student population is 23 years old and 22 years old for full time students. Although much of the student body is full time, almost 15 percent of students qualify as part-time. The majority of FIT students are New York state residents, but around 35 percent of students live outside the state.
Tuition rates at public institutions vary depending on a student’s in or out of state residency. Full-time, in-state students' annual tuition and fees is around $4,800. Full-time, out-of-state students' annual tuition fees are around $13,200. Part-time students determine tuition costs based on how many credits they are taking. Students qualify as part-time students if they take under 12 credit hours. Cost per credit hour for a part-time, in-state student is around $175 and around $525 for a part-time, out-of-state student.
With rising tuition costs over the past decade, many students often feel overwhelmed when faced with deciding how to finance their tuition. Students at FIT can apply for Federal Financial aid, federal work study programs, grants, scholarships and private loans. Students applying for Federal Financial Aid should complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid as soon as possible after the first of the year.
Students at FIT can earn degrees at the associate, bachelor’s and master’s level in addition to post-secondary certificates. FIT offers degrees in areas such as accessories design, fashion design, graphic design, interior design and many others.
