East Tennessee State University is a four-year public institution of higher education located in Johnson City, Tennessee. Students at ETSU can earn their bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree. Founded in 1911 as the East Tennessee State Normal School and its original purpose was to be a training school for teachers. However, just a little more than a decade after its establishment the school became an official college and changes its name to the East Tennessee State Teachers College. Over the next few decades the college began to expand its degree offerings and areas of specialization. In 1963 to signify its additional degree options the college became known as East Tennessee State University. East Tennessee State University is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.  

ETSU is a medium sized university in a primarily rural area. It has about 12,200 undergraduate students and almost 3,000 graduate students. Almost 70 percent of ETSU students return for their second year and about 40 percent of students graduate within in six years. A very large majority of ETSY students are Caucasian with an additional 6 percent of African American students, two percent Hispanic students and one percent Asian students. The average age of the ETSU student body is 23 years old for all students and 22 years old for full time students. While most of ETSU students are full time around 15 percent of students are part-time. Many ETSU students are from Tennessee; however a little more than 10 percent of students are from out of state. There are more women at ETSU and the gender ratio is approximately 60:40.

Full-time in-state annual tuition and fees is around $7,000 and full-time out-of-state tuition and fees is about $22,000. Part-time students’ is dependent on how many credit hours a student takes per semester. Cost per credit hour for a part-time in-state student is $235. For a part-time out-of-state student, cost per credit hour is $845. Students interested in financial aid have several resources available to them. Students can apply for Federal Financial Aid, scholarships, grants and also private loans. Additionally, students are encouraged to apply for outside scholarships and grants as well. Financial aid representatives are also available for students to help work out what financial aid plan is best for them. 

ETSU offers a variety of degree programs in subjects such as audiology, health science, marketing, criminal justice, economics and many more. Some of the most popular degrees at ETSU are business, health sciences, education and liberal arts. Bachelor’s degree programs require students to complete an average of 120 credit hours to complete the program. Students typically finish the program in an average of four years. Masters programs at ETSU require an average of 38 credit hours and can be completed in an average of 18 months. Master’s degree programs require an average of 64 credit hours to complete. Average completion length varies due to the specialized nature of doctoral programs.
