Dawn Career Institute is a private, two-year school that specializes in health, wellness and business programs. The school was founded in 1976 in Wilmington, Delaware as an aviation school, and was originally called the Dawn Aeronautics Flight School. For its first 20 years of operation, the school (approved and certified by the Federal Aviation Administration) focused almost solely on aeronautics and aviation, until 1992 when the school added a program geared at developing Health Insurance Claims Examiners. The addition of this program triggered a name change and the flight school became known as the Dawn Training Centre. In more recent years, the name has once again change to Dawn Career Institute, to better represent the mission and curriculum. Today, the school has made a complete shift in course offerings from its aviation days; its focus is now in the medical, healthcare and legal fields and it offers a wide variety of certificates in each of these.
The medical and healthcare paths offer a wide variety of programs. Dawn’s wellness programs lead to work as an Esthetician (Skin Care Specialist), Massage Therapist, Nail Technician or Person Fitness Trainer. Students in the Esthetician program learn techniques for achieving and maintaining optimum skin health by learning the fundamentals of facials, how proper nutrition affects skin health, aromatherapy, makeup applications, microdermabrasion and many more. Along a similar line, Nail Technician students learn about skin and nail structure, nail diseases and disorders. They become pros at performing manicures, pedicures and other nail enhancements. Another hands-on program is Massage Therapy, where students delve into human anatomy, kinesiology, therapeutic modalities, massage in medicine and more. And for those interested in the other side of anatomy and kinesiology, there is a program that puts out personal trainers. This program assists students in developing exercise-related assessments, creating safe and effective fitness programs and establishing weight loss/gain goals.
Wellness is taken one step further with the medical and health education programs at Dawn. These help students prepare for careers in several areas of an increasingly popular field. The Dental Assistant program arms students with all of the tools needed to provide the best patient care, as well as teaches them the basics behind performing radiological, laboratory, clinical and administrative tasks. Similarly, Medical Assistant and Nurse Assistant programs give students critical patient care skills, teach them how to assist physicians with minor procedures and so much more. The Medical Administrative Specialist program covers medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, professional and medical legal issues, medical transcription practice, medical office skills, and clinical procedures. The tracts for Pharmacy Technician and Medical and Dental Biller/Health Insurance Claims Examiner prepare students in essential skills for the respective roles, learn the basics of quality control and process billing and understand all of the medical language necessary to succeed in each role. Newer programs include the legal assistant path, and array of online options.
Dawn Career Institute is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology as a Private Business and Trade School.
There are just under 700 students in attendance at Dawn Career Institute. Student-to-teacher ratios in the classroom are at the ideal number of 15 to one, and even more focused in a clinical setting. Class sizes are intentionally kept small to provide a more hands-on, intimate learning experience. The faculty at DCI works to provide students transition as smoothly as possible from the classroom into their career.
