Darton State College was founded in 1963 in Albany, Ga. along the Flint River. At the time, it was called Albany Junior College. After about 20 years of operating under that name, a committee of faculty, staff, students and community members changed the name to Darton College; "Darton" being an Old English word meaning "town by the water." Today, Darton has grown into a four-year state college unit of the University System of Georgia, offering 84 two-year transfer and career associate degrees and 49 certificate programs, many of which are offered online as well.
Programs are offered in Allied Health, Business, Computer Programs, the Fine Arts, the Social Sciences, Humanities, Nursing, Physical Education, Science and Mathematics. All college-level programs are accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In addition to these courses, there are also online programs for those wishing to get a Darton education from afar (26 of the associate programs can be completed on the computer), as well as continuing education programs for those wishing to expand their education to excel in a career or simply feed their mind. These continuing education programs are offered in a wide variety of vocations, such as: Computer Education, Corporate Training, Insurance New Agents and Adjuster Pre-examination, Leisure and Personal Enrichment, Professional Development, Real Estate and Travel and Tourism.
The faculty and staff are proficient in their fields and use a very hands-on approach in their teaching—a task made far easier due to classes that of 25 or fewer students. Such an intimate environment enhances the learning experience and provides plenty of opportunity for one-on-one interaction, and demonstrates the mission of Darton to give students the best education possible. Having such an agreeable ratio of professors to match up to nearly 6,000 students shows a high level of dedication and determination.
There are two coed residence halls for enrolled students that provide a home away from home. Everyone who chooses to live on campus is welcome to bring their car—making it possible to visit home or take a weekend road trip to one of the beautiful surrounding areas when one feels the need (though most students will likely be so busy with their coursework and booming social life to venture off too much).
Campus life on Darton provides the perfect blend of education with social events for student—sports and physical activities being a main draw. The student center has a bowling alley, rock-climbing wall, soccer and baseball fields for intercollegiate and intramural athletics, tennis and racquetball courts, an indoor pool, fitness center, weight room, an indoor track and studios for aerobics and dance. The campus is also surrounded by beautiful nature trails. Bikes are also welcome and highly encouraged on campus—in fact, the school had gone to great lengths to install bike racks for students all across the campus. This makes the commute to the classroom an easy work out, but also provides easy storage for those who want to take to the trails! For those whose extracurricular activities are more focused on flexing their mental muscle, Darton also has a beautiful 470-seat theatre, library and computer labs. There is something for everyone at Darton!
