California National University was founded in 1993 after recognizing the need for mid-aged students to be able to continue learning while maintaining their careers and family lifestyle. CNU offers an innovative approach to distance education in its combination of self-study with direct personal contact and technology as well as its one-on-one instruction from faculty. This college offers undergraduate programs, graduate programs, a certificate program and individual courses through extension.
CalUniversity is a small school with less than 500 students that is located in an urban setting of Northridge, California. The institution awards bachelors, masters, specialists and associate degrees. It is comprised of the College of Quality and Engineering Management, College of Business Administration and College of Engineering. Degrees offered include the Bachelors degree in Quality Assurance Science, Science in Engineering and Science in Business Administration; and Master’s Degrees in Engineering Management, Science in Engineering and Business Administration.
CNU is nationally accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council, which is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency.
Tuition fees cost $4,860 for both in-state and out-of-state students. Extension courses cost $310 per unit for undergraduates and $330 per unit for graduates in addition to textbooks. There is also a $75.00 enrollment package and a $300.00 fee for students planning on graduating. Applications fees cost $75.00 and are reviewed on a rolling basis. Students applying for an MBA program must have a bachelor’s degree and submit transcripts with their online application.
Tuition assistance is commonly reimbursed from students’ employers as well as provided for active duty military personnel. Payment plans can be paid in full, divided in three payments over the trimester, or deferred for those students that receive tuition assistance from their employer.
Of all students, 65% are male and 35% are female. Of all 30 faculty members, 16% are female and 84% are male. All faculty members work part-time.
Students need to own a computer and have access to the Internet to be able to have access to distance learning programs and software. One-on-one communication with professors is guaranteed, giving students maximum feedback and exdivert support. This is done through a sequential course syllabus with assignments and guided learning experience. Everything is done online, including turning in assignments, taking exams, and receiving that vital feedback from faculty and classmates. Distance learning provides a flexible, individualized program recognizing that students have other responsibilities. Students will never have to attend classes so they can learn and grow on their own time.
