With a vision of “intercultural understanding,” the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) evolved in San Francisco in 1968 as an increasing number of students desired to learn from the founder, Dr. Haridas Chaudhuri. The private, not-for-profit institute emphasizes integral studies, merging Eastern and Western values, and teaches from a global perspective. CIIS promotes this vision through the Chaudhuri Center, a center focused on “contemplative practice, interreligious dialogue and social justice.” Today, CIIS enrolls more than fourteen hundred students and 95% of those students seek graduate degrees, including both Master’s and Doctorate degrees. Furthermore, CIIS celebrates diversity with a 10% international student body, while approximately 35% of the campus consists of minority students. The institute maintains a student-to-faculty ratio of 16:1.
The California Institute of Integral Studies is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. In addition, CIIS maintains affiliations with numerous organizations, both in the United States and abroad. Several partners include the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Sustainable World Coalition and the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
CIIS awards undergraduate and graduate degrees through three schools:
- School of Undergraduate Studies
- School of Professional Psychology and Health
- School of Consciousness and Transformation
CIIS encourages distance learners to participate in online degrees or enroll in individual online courses. Online degree programs include the Master of Arts in Transformative Leadership and the PhD in Transformative Studies. The Transformative Leadership program culminates with a Capstone Action Project and students participating in the Doctorate program complete a dissertation based on “first-, second-, and third-person perspectives,” and also engage their community through a Learning Assistant role. Both online degree programs require two face-to-face meetings per year, one in August and another in January. Individual online classes may be completed for audit or credit purposes.
