School Details

Founded in 1973, California Coast University is a private distance learning institution that offers online and correspondence programs. This non-profit started in order to meet the needs of professionals from all areas of industry, business, education, and those whose professional, geographic, or time limitations prevented them from completing their education. The program is designed for mid-career adults who are dedicated to accepting personal responsibility for their educational achievements. The average age of the student body is 41 and the majority of CCU students work full time while completing their degrees. This institution holds accreditation through the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), which is a non-profit national agency located in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1926, this agency sets the standard for all distance education institutions.

The university’s ultimate objective is to offer distance learning undergraduate and graduate degree programs to working adults who are looking for a feasible method for finishing their education without returning to the traditional classroom setting. CCU includes the School of Administration Management, School of Behavioral Science, School of Education, School of Criminal Justice, and School of Arts and Sciences. Specific programs offered include psychology, business administration, marketing, management, organizational leadership, human resources, and healthcare. Since the university’s programs are not structured in quarters, semesters, or terms, students can apply and begin their studies at any time during the year. Furthermore, the structure of the programs includes self-paced study with no set meeting or exam dates.

During the application process, students are assessed to determine which courses have already been satisfied, which ones a student can challenge, and which may require the assignment of a study guide. Study guides for each course correspond to specific college level textbooks and are designed to sequence and coordinate the student’s learning materials. Students can also take a challenge exam in a multiple choice format that covers the content of the entire course in order to pass it. CLEP credits are also accepted. In order to apply, students must pay a $75 application fee and send a completed application, detailed resume, and official transcripts for all college level work completed since graduating high school. If the student has not earned 12 college-level credits at an accredited postsecondary institution, then they must provide an official high school transcript of completion. A Request for Elective Credit Based on Specialized Training form with copies of training certificates attached can also be completed for consideration.

Tuition is $150 per credit hour for associate’s and bachelor’s degree courses. For a master’s and doctor’s degree, tuition costs $230 and $290 per credit hour, respectively. Students who have previously received a degree from California Coast University get a 10% institution discount. After a $500 payment toward total tuition by the date of acceptance, students can pay $100 per month without any interest charged on the unpaid balance. However, in the instance that there is a past due balance, late fees will be assessed. Similarly, after a $300 payment toward tuition, students can pay $125 per month without interest.

United States Armed Forces have the benefit of participating in programs that are specifically designed for their needs. CCU evaluates training, prior college credits, and past experiences in order to award academic credit where applicable to its military students. In order to make continuing education more accessible, the university offers 10% savings to active duty service members, veterans, and reservists along with their children and spouses. Military tuition assistance may be used by active military members through Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support. CCU’s degree programs also allow the payment of educational assistance benefits such as the Montgomery G.I. Bill to veterans and other eligible persons under programs administered by United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
